Job Description:
The ECC Technician Assistant (TA) is responsible for providing compassionate and attentive care to all GCVS patients. Key duties include patient husbandry, departmental stocking and cleaning, assisting Veterinarians and Technicians during exams and patient workups, and maintaining detailed patient records throughout hospitalization. Strong communication with Doctors, Leadership, Charge Technicians, Technicians, Client Patient Coordinators, and fellow Technician Assistants is essential to effectively carry out delegated tasks and ensure quality outcomes. This role requires a reliable, proactive, high-energy individual capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Responsibilities:
Monitoring
  • Assist technicians in obtaining vitals
  • Monitor and record food and water intake and expulsion
  • Monitor and record urination and bowel movements
  • Monitor all alerts as indicated by the Veterinarian
  • Notify the Veterinarian and Charge Technician if any alerts are out of normal range

Clinical
  • Assist Technicians in completing diagnostics- collecting lab samples, taking radiographs
  • Assist Technicians in performing triages
  • Assist with A&E patients that come through ER or are hospitalized in ICU/IMC
  • Deliver lab samples to the lab, request/prepare/send off imaging for Radiologist interpretation
  • Assist with bandage and wound care
  • Set up for advanced skill procedures per SOP protocols
  • Ability to set up for IVC's, blood sampling, and making associated bandage material
  • Feed, walk, weigh hospitalized patients that are stable and report back to assigned Technician and record appropriately in medical record
  • Remaining cognizant of patient cleanliness

Patient Transport
  • Transferring patients to necessary areas of GCVS for efficient care

Sample Collection
  • Free catch urine collection
  • Fecal collection
  • Peripheral blood sampling- if approved by leadership

Janitorial
  • Stocking and cleaning within the department
  • Laundry
  • Washing dishes, litterboxes, and e-collars
  • Trash collection and disposal
  • Ensure that the clinic environment is clean and sanitized, clean animal cages/runs and sanitize all treatment areas - this includes tables, equipment such as dopplers and pulse-ox, counters, floors, isolation wards, ante room, food prep area, laundry, etc.

Clerical
  • Typing on a computer keyboard
  • Documenting legibly in patient records
  • Performing general function of the phone system
  • Keep clear medical records for all patients
  • Learn appropriate software per hospital/departmental workflow

Collaboration
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings
  • Actively participate in check-in conversations with your leadership team

Other Skills and Abilities
  • Provide assistance to our CPC's, Veterinary Technicians, and Veterinarians
  • Provide patient restraint during triages, workups, and examinations
  • Prepare workstations for procedures and continued monitoring
  • Calm and soothe anxious patients
  • Adhere to hospital's safety and wellness regulations
  • Assist in CPR efforts- specific to time keeping and recording
  • Stocking of Crash Cart
  • Assist with EKG's
  • Preparation of Oxygen Cages, inclusive of monitoring and changing Soda Lyme
  • Place IVC's- if approved by leadership personnel and with seasoned mentor
  • Carefully handle animals during hospital visit for testing, injection, and other clinical procedures that they may undergo
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, including word processing, designing forms, maintaining files, dictation and transcription, communicating via email, and the use of computer programs to manage and maintain client and patient information
  • Knowledge of basic drug usages, generic and brand names, possible side effects/reactions
  • Knowledge of clinic procedures in support of streamlining patient care protocols and clients' experiences with us.
  • Other job duties or expectations may be added or changed at any time per your leadership team or per the business need.

Qualifications:
  • High School diploma is required, Associate's degree (A. A.) or Bachelors is preferred; or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education / experience.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a surgical or specialty veterinary setting is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-year experience in general or specialty veterinary service.
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical skills are essential, including:
    • Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
    • Intubation/Extubation experience
    • Surgical preparation and assistance
    • Proficiency in diagnostic imaging and laboratory procedures
  • Experience handling and processing surgical instruments, including specialized equipment
  • Adapts positively to the ever-changing healthcare environment by supporting technology and process changes.
  • Must possess excellent listening and interpersonal skills and problem-solving methods.
  • Fluent English skills (speaking & reading) are required for the role; fluency in multiple languages a plus!
