What is a food handler?

Food handlers are individuals who work in environments where they prepare, serve, or handle food, such as restaurants, cafeterias, and food processing facilities. Their responsibilities include following food safety procedures, maintaining cleanliness, and preventing contamination to ensure food is safe for consumption. Food handlers may work as cooks, servers, kitchen staff, or in roles that involve direct contact with food or food preparation surfaces. Many regions require food handlers to complete specific training or obtain a certification to ensure they understand proper hygiene and safety practices.

What are some common challenges food handlers face in maintaining food safety standards, and how can they overcome them?

Food handlers often encounter challenges such as keeping up with strict hygiene protocols during busy periods, preventing cross-contamination, and consistently monitoring food temperatures. Overcoming these challenges requires diligent handwashing, proper use of gloves, thorough cleaning of surfaces, and regular training on updated food safety guidelines. Effective communication within the team and using checklists or digital systems can also help ensure standards are met even during high-pressure times.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a food handler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Food Handler, you need basic food safety knowledge, attention to cleanliness, and often a food handler’s permit or certification. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, safe food storage systems, and compliance with local health regulations is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure food is prepared safely, prevent contamination, and support a healthy, efficient work environment.

Job description

Director of Hospitality Operations

Las Vegas Distillery  |  On-Site, Henderson NV

Run the guest experience at Las Vegas's premier craft distillery.

Las Vegas Distillery is a fast-growing craft spirits company with a fiercely loyal local following and ambitions to expand regionally and nationally.  We're looking for a hands-on Director of Hospitality Operations who will turn every visit into a reason guests come back.

The Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Hospitality Operations owns all guest-facing operations at Las Vegas Distillery, including but not limited to food and beverage operations, banquet facilities, public and private events, live entertainment.  You'll run the day-to-day operations of the building, manage and develop the hospitality team (bartenders, kitchen, and tour guides), and partner closely with the Special Events Coordinator and Director of Marketing to drive traffic and revenue across the venue.  Further, you will be engaged in the planning and coordination of our facility’s expansion which is estimated to increase guest capacity three-fold.  This is not simply a managerial position; we're looking for a culture builder, an ideas generator, and a solutions-driven leader who elevates the team and the guest experience at every level.

What You'll Drive

•       Own the bar and cocktail program, including sourcing, pricing, inventory, and service, maintaining deep knowledge of Las Vegas Distillery spirits for both cocktail service and straight tasting.

•       Partner with the Lead Bartender and Kitchen Manager on all menu items, cocktails and seasonal specials.

•       Oversee bottle and merchandise sales, ensuring products are highly visible and promoted to guests as souvenirs and gifts.

•       Manage all hospitality staff scheduling, payroll, and tip pool administration.

•       Hold full P&L accountability, including revenue, cost of goods, labor, and margin improvement, along with inventory accuracy and waste control.

•       Oversee daily till reconciliation and bank deposits, with comp and void authority within established limits.

•       Keep the marketing, PR, and special events teams informed of all food and beverage specials, and track the performance of events, specials, and performers.

•       Maintain the facility's appearance and building operations, coordinating maintenance, vendors, and supplies.

•       Track trends in craft spirits, cocktail culture, and hospitality to keep Las Vegas Distillery competitive and relevant.

Who We're Looking For

Every candidate must hold or obtain:

•       Food Handler Card: a valid Southern Nevada Health District Food Handler Safety Training Card.

•       Alcohol Awareness (TAM): a valid Nevada alcohol awareness (TAM) card.

•       Food Handler Manager Card: a Food Handler Manager Card, obtained upon starting in the role.

In addition, the ideal candidate demonstrates:

•       Proven hands-on leadership of a bar, restaurant, and hospitality team, with P&L accountability and staff scheduling experience.

•       Deep knowledge of bar and cocktail programs, food and beverage operations, and inventory management.

•       A track record delivering an outstanding guest experience that builds repeat visits and revenue; be ready to share specific examples and results.

•       Experience managing private events, banquets, or VIP-level hospitality service.

•       Comfort working on-site in Henderson, Nevada, including weekends and occasional event nights.

Career Opportunities

•       A genuine opportunity to flourish with our company’s growth as we expand, locally, nationally and internationally.

•       Competitive salary plus performance bonus.

•       Comprehensive benefit package.

How to Apply

Send your resume and a short note (three to five sentences) telling us about a time you turned around or elevated a guest experience, the result it produced, and the metric that proves it.
