Job description

Position Summary

The Distribution Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the company’s distribution department, ensuring efficient delivery performance, fleet reliability, regulatory compliance, and high service standards. This role oversees dispatch, driver operations, and fleet management while supporting food safety, quality programs, and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong organizational, analytical, and team leadership skills who can manage a fast-paced distribution environment while maintaining compliance with food safety regulations and transportation standards.


Key Responsibilities

Distribution Operations & Leadership

  • Lead and coordinate the entire Distribution team, including the Junior Supervisor, Dispatchers, and Drivers.
  • Manage hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and disciplinary actions for distribution staff.
  • Ensure daily operations meet delivery timelines, quality standards, and operational efficiency goals.
  • Monitor and improve distribution KPIs, including on-time deliveries, driver performance, route efficiency, and vehicle utilization.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Production, and Quality teams to ensure smooth distribution flow and product handling.

Fleet Management

  • Oversee a fleet of vans and box trucks, ensuring vehicles are maintained in safe and operational condition.
  • Maintain accountability for vehicle maintenance schedules, including oil changes, tires, mechanical service, and cleanliness.
  • Conduct or supervise daily vehicle inspections at the end of driver shifts, including:
    • Vehicle condition
    • Fuel levels
    • Cleanliness and organization
    • Rack and equipment counts
  • Coordinate repairs, maintenance vendors, and fleet service providers as needed.

Compliance, Food Safety & Quality

  • Ensure distribution operations comply with FDA FSMA regulations, internal food safety standards, and quality programs.
  • Support compliance with GMP, HACCP, SQF, and other food safety protocols.
  • Ensure all distribution staff participate in required safety, compliance, and food handling training programs.
  • Assist with internal audits, inspections, and compliance documentation.

Technology & Reporting

  • Monitor and analyze driver and fleet performance using Geotab or similar fleet management systems.
  • Track and report on key operational metrics and compliance indicators.
  • Maintain accurate operational documentation and audit records.
  • Ensure adherence to company systems and procedures, including Enterprise and Penske platforms.

Operational Coordination

  • Communicate professionally and effectively with Quality, Operations, Production, and Sanitation teams.
  • Coordinate sanitation support for vehicles or distribution areas when required.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, cost control, and operational reliability.

Education

  • College Degree Preferred
  • Associate degree or relevant coursework in logistics, supply chain, or business preferred

Experience

  • 5–10 years of experience in distribution, logistics, or transportation operations
  • 3+ years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred
  • Experience in food manufacturing or food distribution environments strongly preferred
