What is a FOH manager?

FOH Managers, or Front of House Managers, are responsible for overseeing the customer-facing aspects of a restaurant, bar, or hospitality venue. Their main duties include supervising staff, ensuring excellent customer service, managing reservations, addressing guest concerns, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere. They work closely with the kitchen (back of house) and other departments to ensure smooth operations and guest satisfaction. FOH Managers typically handle scheduling, staff training, and may also assist with inventory and sales reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FOH manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FOH Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and experience in hospitality management, often supported by a degree or relevant work history. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, reservation software, and health and safety regulations is typically expected. Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills help build a positive team culture and guest experience. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient operations, guest satisfaction, and smooth coordination between staff and management.

What are some common challenges faced by a FOH manager, and how can they be addressed?

A FOH Manager often encounters challenges such as balancing high customer expectations with staff productivity, managing busy service periods, and resolving conflicts between team members or with guests. To address these challenges, it's important to maintain clear communication, provide ongoing staff training, and develop strong problem-solving skills. Building a positive team culture and staying adaptable during peak times can also help ensure smooth operations and excellent customer experiences.

Job description

Front of House Manager — Zeppelin DC
Full-Time

Zeppelin pairs the artistry of Japanese cuisine with the adventure of the Golden Age of airships, bringing together Edomae-style sushi, charcoal-grilled yakitori, and omakase in a space that balances precision with warmth. At Zeppelin, we don't have customers, we have guests — and hospitality, not just the plate, is what brings people back.

Position Summary
Zeppelin is seeking an experienced Front of House Manager to join our leadership team. Our managers act as captains of the ship — making sure it's never sinking. Rather than focusing on one area, a strong FOH Manager stays well-rounded, acting as a second hand and support for the entire restaurant, stepping in wherever needed to keep service running smoothly and guests taken care of. This is a current opening at Zeppelin, and also serves as a pipeline for future FOH Manager opportunities at other locations within our restaurant group.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day floor operations, ensuring steps of service, hospitality standards, and guest experience are consistently executed at a high level
  • Lead, train, and develop FOH staff across all positions — server, host, bartender, barback, busser, and food runner
  • Be a visible, active presence on the floor, ready to step in wherever needed — greeting a first-time guest, covering a slammed section, or resolving an issue in real time
  • Handle guest recovery and difficult situations with sound judgment, empowering staff to act quickly while staying informed
  • Manage scheduling, staffing coverage, and day-to-day FOH decision-making
  • Uphold and help evolve Zeppelin's culture, standards, and service philosophy
  • Partner with kitchen and beverage leadership to ensure a seamless guest experience across the entire restaurant

Requirements

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in a restaurant management or leadership role within fine dining or upscale service, required
  • Experience with Japanese cuisine preferred
  • Strong knowledge of food and beverage service standards, with the ability to train and elevate a team's skill level
  • Proven leadership ability — confident making decisions in the moment, and comfortable being a hands-on presence on the floor
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work closely with both FOH staff and kitchen leadership
  • A genuine hospitality mindset — someone who leads by example and treats every guest's experience as a priority

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay, commensurate with experience
  • Health insurance, paid time off, and sick time, effective after 90 days of employment
  • Opportunities for growth at Zeppelin, as well as other locations within our restaurant group, as they become available
  • A workplace that genuinely invests in its people through training, product knowledge, and a real hospitality culture
