  • Appointment Type. This is an Exempt position excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process, pursuant to the City and County of San Francisco, Charter Section 10.104. They are considered "at will" and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of these appointments is up to 36 months.

Job Description
The Print / Mail Machine Operator, under direct supervision, operates large format printers, large format digital cutter/router, large format laminating and mounting equipment, high speed copiers and other related printing, bindery and finishing equipment used to produce reports, brochures, booklets, forms, maps, directories, wall graphics, banners and signage.
You are excited about this opportunity because you will:
  1. Operates, sets up and adjusts bindery and finishing equipment such as folding machine, spiral binding machine, and heavy-duty programmable cutter, etc. to produce manuals, booklets, brochures and other printed materials.
  2. Operates high speed digital copiers including the use of print drivers like Fiery or Creo for setting up and outputting print jobs and by sending print files from desktop to print drivers or printers, retrieving files from share drives, email and work order attachments. Understand complex settings using online finishing, tabs inserting, multi color sheets inserting and booklet making.
  3. Operates automatic and tabletop spiral binding equipment with inter-changeable dyes for different type of bindings; collates and binds books or forms.
  4. Operates wide format engineering printer including scanning of originals and saving electronic files from scans.
  5. Performs routine calibrations, adjustments and maintenance on all printing and binding equipment; cleans and maintains working areas including storage area.
  6. Performs as-needed materials and project pick-up and deliveries.
  7. Provides production reports as required using the work order system.
  8. Sorts, packs, distributes, mails and delivers printed materials as needed; receives incoming projects and distributes completed projects.
  9. Follows safety procedures and reports safety hazards.
  10. Operates large format printing, laminating, mounting, digital cutting and trimming equipment.
  11. Perform other functions outlined in the 1760 Print/Mail Machine Operator job classification.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
  • Two (2) years of recent experience in the operation of an offset machine and/or high-speed digital production printer (including bindery) in a reprographic or production center environment

Supplemental Information:
  • Nature of work requires physical effort and manual dexterity in the operation and maintenance of high speed digital or other related equipment; perform heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds.
  • Valid California Driver's License at time of appointment

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Two (2) years of recent experience using a large format digital printer and personal computer and large format laminating and mounting equipment.
  2. Experience using raster image processor (RIP) software, such as ONYX, Caldera, and/or Fiery.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  5. Excellent computer skills.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Selection Procedures
The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to interview. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance: Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
