Fly Shop information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the fly shop position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Fly Shop, you should have in-depth knowledge of fly fishing, retail operations, and inventory management, often supported by experience in guiding or outdoor recreation sales. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, product ordering software, and fly tying equipment is important. Excellent interpersonal skills, customer service excellence, and enthusiasm for teaching others help you build lasting customer relationships. These abilities ensure customers receive expert advice and a positive experience, driving both repeat business and shop success.

What is a fly shop?

A Fly Shop job typically involves working in a retail store that specializes in fly fishing gear, including rods, reels, flies, and apparel. Employees assist customers by providing product recommendations, sharing local fishing knowledge, and sometimes offering casting or fly-tying advice. The job may also include inventory management, stocking merchandise, and handling sales transactions. Some fly shop employees guide fishing trips or help organize community events. Strong customer service skills and a passion for fly fishing are often essential for success in this role.

What does a typical day look like when working in a fly shop?

A typical day in a Fly Shop involves assisting customers with equipment selection, providing recommendations on local fishing conditions, placing or receiving inventory orders, and sometimes tying or repairing flies. You may also spend time educating customers about casting techniques or local waters, restocking shelves, and maintaining displays. Collaboration with team members to coordinate events or fly fishing classes is common. This dynamic environment requires adaptability and a passion for helping fellow anglers enjoy their time on the water.

Job description

The Glass Doctor of North Texas is seeking a skilled and reliable Residential Glazier to join our Multifamily Division, where you’ll play a key role in installing and replacing glass across large-scale residential properties. Your craftsmanship and efficiency will be the backbone of our growing department. This isn’t a fly-by-night operation — we’re looking for someone who’s as committed to quality and timelines as we are.

What You’ll Do:

  • Install, replace, and repair residential glass in windows, doors, sliders, and shower enclosures
  • Measure, cut, and handle glass safely and accurately in both shop and field settings
  • Work closely with the Multifamily Division Manager to ensure jobs are completed on time and to spec
  • Maintain proper documentation and photos for work completed (we’re big on process)
  • Navigate active job sites and communicate clearly with onsite teams, vendors, and sometimes residents
  • Load, transport, and unload materials using company vehicles

What We’re Looking For:

  • 2+ years of residential or commercial glazing experience (multifamily is a major plus)
  • Proficient in measuring, cutting, and handling glass safely
  • Knowledge of various glazing systems (windows, storefronts, mirrors, frameless showers, etc.)
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean record
  • Strong communication and time management skills
  • Ability to lift 75+ lbs and work on ladders or scaffolding when needed
  • Comfortable working independently or as part of a team

Why Join Us?

  • Stability: We’re a fast-growing glass company with strong partnerships in the multifamily space
  • Culture: We believe in craftsmanship, hustle, and having fun while doing it
  • Growth: Plenty of room to move up as we scale our operations
  • Perks: Paid time off, health benefits, bonus opportunities, and company truck/tools for field techs
  • Competitive Pay: $23-$30/hr with opportunity to bonuses on each check
