Fly In Out Nursing information

What is a fly in fly out nurse?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) nurses are registered nurses who travel to remote or regional locations, often on a rostered basis, to provide healthcare services where there may be a shortage of permanent medical staff. They typically work in mining sites, rural hospitals, indigenous communities, or other isolated environments. FIFO nurses usually work for a set period, such as two weeks on and one week off, and their travel and accommodation are generally arranged by the employer. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work autonomously in diverse healthcare settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fly in fly out nurse?

To thrive as a Fly In/Fly Out Nurse, you need a valid nursing degree, current RN licensure, and strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, remote monitoring equipment, and often additional certifications in advanced life support are typically required. Excellent adaptability, resilience, and strong communication skills are essential for working in isolated, multicultural, and high-pressure environments. These abilities ensure nurses can provide quality care, address diverse health needs, and manage challenges in remote or resource-limited settings.

What are common challenges faced by fly in fly out nurses and how can they be managed?

FIFO nursing roles often involve extended periods away from home, working in remote or rural locations with limited resources. Nurses may face challenges such as adapting to isolation, irregular work hours, and high patient acuity in understaffed environments. Building strong communication skills, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and participating in peer support networks can help manage these challenges. Employers often provide orientation, ongoing training, and access to mental health resources to support FIFO nurses in these unique settings.

Job description

Principia Education is looking for an English tutor with excellent communication skills and a love for helping students.
A bit about us:
We're a one-stop shop for our students' educational needs, covering all academic subjects, test prep, and college consulting. Our ultimate goal is to distill teaching to the core elements that made us fall in love with it in the first place: focusing on content rather than classroom management; celebrating creativity and flexibility rather than a one-size-fits-all approach; and above all, building long-term relationships with students and families.
Our team is a group of empathetic and excellent communicators, and we're looking for a teacher who takes pride in their attention to detail, reliability, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Here's what you'll do:
  • Conduct SAT reading/writing, ACT reading/writing, AP English Language, AP English Literature, and general English sessions (creative writing content or SSAT/HSPT would be a plus!)
  • Communicate directly with families in a professional and timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Principia leadership and operations staff to maintain a positive environment and our exceptional standards.

Here's what we're looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A weekly commitment of at least 10+ availabile teaching hours in our McLean office.
  • Flexibility to work both weekday evenings and weekends.
  • Long-term plans to stay in the education field part-time-we ask for at least a one-year commitment.

Here's why you should join us!
  • Compensation: We start at $50 per hour for all sessions, and our most experienced, tenured instructors make over $100 per hour for sessions.
  • Training: We provide comprehensive paid training, with multiple hours for each subject/content area, including shadowing fellow instructors and live sessions with students, mock teaching and instruction modeling with our leadership team, and meetings for session planning to ensure you feel supported and prepared.
  • Impact: Join our team of curriculum experts, dynamic instructors, and college consultants dedicated to supporting families with every step of their student's academic journey.
  • Community: We hang out! We have regular get-togethers and every quarter fly-in our remote staff for company-sponsored events - take a look here for some recent ones

No phone calls, please! Apply and we'll be in touch if we're interested in moving forward. Please note that testing and a teaching sample will be included in our interview process.
