Personal Finance Educator
1099 Independent Contractor • Part-Time • New York Metropolitan Area
Role OverviewThe Personal Finance Educator delivers FLY's core financial literacy curriculum to students and community members in schools, community-based settings, and partner sites across the New York metropolitan area. As a key member of FLY's New York launch team, this educator plays a central role in establishing our presence in the region and ensuring young people and families gain the essential knowledge, confidence, and skills to make informed financial decisions. Educators work closely with site staff, partners, and the FLY team to deliver engaging, inclusive, and culturally responsive instruction that builds community and inspires action.
This is a foundational hire for FLY's New York expansion. We are specifically seeking educators who live in or are deeply connected to the New York metro area and bring a strong professional network of schools, community organizations, nonprofits, or youth-serving partners that can help FLY scale quickly and credibly in the region.
Schedule, Travel & Compensation- Schedule: Flexible availability to facilitate sessions between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend programming, special events, and workshops.
- Travel: Travel to assigned partner sites across the New York metro area is required. Educators should be comfortable navigating the region by transit or vehicle and moving between schools, community centers, and partner locations across the five boroughs and surrounding areas.
- Compensation: Pay is commensurate with the educator's education, professional skills, and relevant experience. Specific rates are discussed with finalists during the offer stage.
- Geography: This role is exclusively for educators based in or with deep working knowledge of the New York metropolitan area.
All FLY roles are expected to uphold and model our organizational values. These are not aspirational; they are embedded in how we lead, collaborate, and show up for students, partners, and one another every day.
- Trust - We build trust through consistency, accountability, and care.
- Respect - We honor diverse perspectives and treat one another with dignity.
- Authenticity - We bring our whole selves to the work we do.
- Inclusivity - We embrace and uplift every voice, experience, and identity.
- Transparency - We communicate openly and honestly, even when it's hard.
- Self-Directedness - We lead with initiative and take ownership of our growth.
- Facilitate financial literacy programming aligned to FLY's curriculum with energy, clarity, and command of the room.
- Customize lessons to meet student needs while maintaining fidelity to learning objectives.
- Ensure inclusive and interactive classroom environments that support diverse learners.
- Apply a strong working understanding of personal finance concepts (budgeting, credit, saving, investing, debt management, banking, financial decision-making) to bring lessons to life.
- Demonstrate strong facilitation skills - engaging mixed audiences, managing group dynamics, and adapting in real time.
- Build community among learners, partners, and site staff that extends beyond the classroom.
- Collaborate with site personnel to support student participation and program logistics.
- Maintain classroom management and instructional pacing aligned to the program schedule.
- Track attendance, participation, and student progress.
- Complete session summaries and student engagement logs.
- Support pre- and post-assessments and share key learnings with the instructional team.
- Provide feedback for program improvement and curriculum development.
- Attend instructional team meetings and contribute to professional learning sessions.
- Share best practices and participate in ongoing training.
- Serve as a local champion for FLY in the New York metropolitan area, helping establish the organization's presence and reputation in the region.
- Leverage personal and professional networks across NY-area schools, community organizations, nonprofits, faith-based institutions, and youth-serving partners to introduce FLY to potential program sites.
- Make warm introductions to school administrators, principals, after-school program directors, community leaders, and other gatekeepers who can open doors for FLY programming.
- Support outreach activities, special events, or public workshops to promote financial literacy and program engagement in the region.
- Represent FLY at New York-area community events, partner meetings, or professional development sessions, as assigned.
- Participate in occasional curriculum reviews, feedback sessions, or pilot testing of new program materials.
- Assist in mentoring new educators, onboarding volunteers, or collaborating with peer facilitators.
- Contribute to cross-functional projects that support organizational priorities or seasonal initiatives.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Programming and Operations or Executive Leadership.
- This role is structured as a 1099 independent contractor Contractors are responsible for managing their own tax withholdings, benefits, and insurance in compliance with applicable state and federal laws.
- Schedule flexibility is expected to meet the demands of program delivery; contractors will receive advance notice of assignments and expected deliverables.
- Contractor engagement is project-based; continuation is contingent upon programmatic needs, funding availability, and performance.
- Contractors are expected to maintain professional liability coverage and adhere to FLY's instructional code of conduct and confidentiality policies.
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Finance, Youth Development, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of teaching, training, or youth facilitation experience.
- Strong content knowledge in personal finance - or demonstrated willingness and aptitude to be trained.
- Strong facilitation skills - able to engage learners, manage classroom dynamics, and lead group discussions with confidence.
- Solid understanding of personal finance concepts sufficient to teach, answer questions, and translate ideas for diverse audiences.
- Ability to build community - fostering connection, trust, and belonging among students, partners, and peers.
- Ability to command a room - bringing presence, clarity, and confidence to every session.
- Established New York-area presence - currently residing in or extensively working across the NY metropolitan area, with a working knowledge of the region's neighborhoods, schools, and communities.
- Active professional network in New York that can support FLY's entry into local schools, nonprofits, and community organizations.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with both youth and adults.
- Adaptability across diverse environments, learning needs, and partner contexts.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace or Microsoft Office.
- Experience teaching or facilitating in classroom or workshop settings with youth or young adults in New York City public schools, charter networks, or community-based youth programs.
- Existing relationships with NYC DOE schools, after-school program networks (e.g., DYCD-funded programs, Beacon, COMPASS), or NY-area community development organizations.
- Familiarity with the financial literacy landscape and youth-serving ecosystem across the five boroughs.
- Bilingual or multilingual ability - particularly Spanish - is a strong plus given the linguistic diversity of NY communities.
- Punctual and prepared for all sessions across assigned sites.
- Maintains fidelity to FLY curriculum while adapting delivery for student needs.
- Achieves positive student feedback and visible classroom participation.
- Uses inclusive practices that foster student voice and empowerment.
- Submits attendance logs, feedback forms, and session summaries within required timeframes.
- Completes pre- and post-assessments and supports evaluation efforts.
- Establishes strong rapport with school and site partners; demonstrates professionalism.
- Demonstrates responsiveness to classroom dynamics and site-based needs.
Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a resume and a brief cover letter outlining their relevant experience, New York-area connections, and interest in supporting FLY's expansion in the region.
