What is a fly in fly out operator machinist?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Operator Machinists are skilled tradespeople who travel to remote worksites, typically in the mining, oil, or gas industries, to operate and maintain machinery. They work on a rotational schedule, flying to the site for a set period (such as two weeks on) and then flying home for time off (such as one week off). Their responsibilities include setting up, operating, and troubleshooting machine tools, as well as performing routine maintenance. FIFO Operator Machinists must adapt to challenging environments and often work long shifts while on site. This role requires technical expertise, flexibility, and a willingness to spend extended periods away from home.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fly in fly out operator machinist?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Operator Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, trade qualifications (such as a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or equivalent), and hands-on machining experience. Familiarity with CNC machines, lathes, milling equipment, and safety systems, along with relevant certifications like confined space and working at heights, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability to remote environments, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and precise operation and maintenance of critical equipment in challenging, remote work settings.

To manage these challenges, many employers provide on-site support services, recreational facilities, and structured shift rotations. Building strong communication with family and taking advantage of on-site resources can help maintain well-being and job satisfaction.
