What is a Fly In Fly Out nurse?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) nurses are healthcare professionals who travel to remote or rural locations for work, often on a rostered schedule such as two weeks on and one week off. They typically provide essential medical care in areas where permanent healthcare staff are scarce, such as mining camps, oil rigs, or isolated communities. FIFO nurses may work in various specialties and must adapt to different environments and patient needs. The role often involves long shifts and living away from home during work rotations, but offers competitive salaries and unique experiences.

Familiarity with telehealth platforms, satellite communication systems, and certifications like Advanced Life Support (ALS) are typically required. Strong adaptability, resilience, and cultural sensitivity enable effective patient care in diverse and isolated environments. These skills ensure safe, responsive healthcare delivery and foster trust in communities with limited access to regular medical services.
