Job description

December 1 to April 15: In Tacoma Washington assisting in Maintenance & Repair of electrical systems, conveyor systems, and clean up on lighterage barges. Standard workweek is 4 days a week, 10 hours a day.
June 25 to November 1: In Red Dog, Alaska and expected to be able to identify and repair electrical issues relating to conveyor systems, fueling & lube systems, power generating systems, control circuits. Responsible for inspecting and reporting and repairing any issues with barge electric systems. Assisting in safe operations and maintenance of barge machinery. Electricians are expected to work one (1), 9.75-hour shift per day. Electrician is on call 24/7 and reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
  • Repair and Maintenance of Lighterage Barge Electrical Systems.
  • Assist in overall Maintenance and Repair of barge systems including parts, testing, designing, installation, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge or comprehension of PLC controls, Variable Frequency Drives, 480/240/120 V AC systems, 12/24 V DC systems.
  • Participation in the Lead Compliance Program with respect to quarterly blood testing, fitting, and proper utilization of respiratory protection.

Knowledge, Skills and Abiliities:
  • PLC troubleshooting, operation.
  • VFD troubleshooting, operation.
  • 480/240 V AC 3ph distribution.
  • Switchboard, Paralleling Generators
  • Low voltage control circuits, control panels.
  • General maintenance skills, Megging motors, cleaning, tightening breakers and switches, etc.
  • Must be proficient in electrical troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance on various high voltage power distribution equipment, using blueprint/schematic diagrams and OEM technical manuals.
  • Ensure that personal safety equipment issued is used at all times and is properly maintained.
  • Adherence to Standard Operating Procedures as given in the Barge Electrician Manual.
  • Adherence to the Foss Drug and Alcohol Policy, as well as all policies and work rules as given in the Foss Employee handbook.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains, tests, and repairs shipboard electrical/electronic, systems and components.
  • Applies knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical principles in determining equipment malfunctions and applies skills in restoring equipment to operation.
  • Plans and performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical theories and principles, Standard Items, Marine Electrical Practices, properties of various materials, and principles of operation and application of electrical equipment.
  • Installs and connects required equipment in accordance with provided work item specifications, references, and drawings.
  • Plans and installs correct cabling for installed equipment.
  • Tests equipment in accordance with testing procedures and fills out and submits all required reports related to testing and installation.
  • Identify needed materials and requisition material.
  • Schedules, reports, and briefs senior management.
  • Performs duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

Environment and Working Conditions
  • Subject to weather conditions, including exposure to high noise levels and exposure to heat and cold.
  • Work is generally performed in the field.
  • Candidate must be able to work for extended periods in confined spaces wearing safety equipment such as, hard hat, gloves, boots, rain gear, and respirators for protection from harmful dust and fumes.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.

Physical/Mental Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit/stand; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to move between buildings, ascend/descend stairs and go outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • One needs the ability to climb ladders and over bulwarks.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
  • Must have reasonable sensory skills. Including color vision, depth perception, hand/eye coordination and hearing.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Must be flexible and receptive to change.
  • Must have ability to deviate from established routines on short notice and be able to recognize the level of importance of new assignments.
  • Must be able to fly in a fixed-wing aircraft.

Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience is required. Must pass a physical-fit exam and drug screen. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess or be willing to obtain TWIC card.
Compensation
Pay for this position will be between $70,000 and $95,000 per year.
