ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.
JOB PURPOSE: Pomona College seeks a dynamic and innovative professional staff member who will contribute fully to the operations of the Admissions Office and the Access Team whose mission is to increase the representation of traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education through spirited outreach and mindful advocacy. The Assistant Dean will manage multiple fly-in programs during the academic year with the assistance of another admission officer and administrative coordinator. This person participates in all aspects of student recruitment traveling throughout the year to represent Pomona College at school visits, college fairs, and other admission related programs. The Assistant Dean also serves as an admissions officer with responsibilities that include giving information sessions, overseeing all aspects of a recruitment territory, reading applicant files and participating in the selection of a new class.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Associate Dean & Director of Special Projects, the Assistant Dean performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
1. Manage the planning and day-to-day operations of the fly-in programs in the fall for prospective students and in the spring for admitted students.
2. Collaborate with the Communications Team to deploy timely and accurate communications for the fly-in programs.
3. Collaborate with the Associate Dean & Director of Recruitment in developing and implementing strategies to attract and enroll traditionally underrepresented students at the College.
4. Performs recruiting and admission functions for a designated national territory:
a. Travel to designated national territory to visit high schools, college fairs, community colleges, community-based organizations, and participate in group travel.
b. Contact, meet, recruit and work to enroll prospective high school and transfer students.
c. Send and respond to inquiries and correspondence about the admissions process in a timely manner.
d. Advise students seeking information about professional career paths through Pomona College's academic and social opportunities with a broad liberal arts education, including internships, study abroad, minors and double majors.
e. Assist students with the application process.
f. Read, evaluate and rate applicant admission materials to make appropriate referrals to the Admissions Selection Committee and to meet the College's annual enrollment goals.
g. Attend Office of Admission meetings.
h. Follow up with admitted students as part of the yield process.
i. Serve as the College's liaison to students, their parents and the communities in their assigned territory.
j. Serve as a liaison with high school counselors including scheduling appointments to meet them.
5. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators within the Claremont Colleges Consortium.
6. Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This successful candidate must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed. The incumbent must be able to:
1. Deploy professional skills in recruiting, and advising students, families, and counselors, in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the College's strategic interests.
a. Manage application details to help prospective and newly enrolling students.
b. Build rapport with High School Counselors in assigned territories.
2. Demonstrate effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication. Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
a. Must respond to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner.
3. Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software (such as Slate and menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
4. Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the College's strategic vision and the division's annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
5. Display exceptional organizational, time management and reading skills to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.
6. Manage ambiguity, collaborate with peers on long-term projects and engage diverse audiences of students, counselors, parents and College alumni with ease.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Travel will be required at least four times a year to assigned territories. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This position is a regular, full-time, exempt position. Annual Salary for this position is between $74,000 - $78,000 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California
