Fly Fly Out information

What is a Fly Fly Out job?

A Fly Fly Out (FIFO) job is a type of employment where workers travel to remote job sites for a set period before returning home for scheduled time off. These jobs are common in industries like mining, oil and gas, and construction. Employers typically cover travel and housing expenses while workers stay in temporary accommodations near the worksite. FIFO schedules vary, with common rotations such as two weeks on, one week off. This arrangement allows workers to access high-paying jobs in remote locations without having to relocate permanently.

What is the typical work schedule like for Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) positions?

Fly-In Fly-Out roles commonly operate on a roster system, such as two weeks working on-site followed by one week off, though schedules can vary depending on the employer and project. Shifts are often long and may include night or weekend hours, reflecting the need to maximize productivity while on-site. During work periods, employees are usually provided accommodation, meals, and recreational facilities at or near remote job sites. This schedule allows for concentrated work periods balanced with extended time off, which can help with managing work-life balance and fatigue. Before applying, consider how the roster and lifestyle fit with your personal and family commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fly Fly Out position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) role, you need solid trade or technical skills relevant to sectors like mining, construction, or oil and gas, often backed by formal qualifications or apprenticeships. Familiarity with industry-specific machinery, safety certifications (such as MSHA or OSHA), and remote work systems is typically required. Strong adaptability, resilience, and effective communication are valuable soft skills, as FIFO roles often involve extended time away from home and working in close-knit teams. These attributes ensure safe, efficient work and support well-being in isolated, high-stakes environments.
