A Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection (FPI) job involves using a specialized dye and ultraviolet (UV) light to detect surface defects in metal and non-porous materials. Inspectors apply the penetrant, allow it to seep into flaws, remove excess dye, and use UV light to reveal cracks, porosity, or other defects. This non-destructive testing (NDT) method is commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries to ensure material integrity. FPI technicians must follow strict procedures and safety guidelines to deliver accurate inspections.
A typical day in Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection involves preparing and cleaning parts, applying penetrant chemicals, using inspection equipment under specific lighting conditions, and meticulously recording findings. Inspectors often work closely with quality assurance teams, engineers, and production staff to identify and document material defects or irregularities. Attention to safety procedures and industry standards is paramount, as the role involves working with specialized chemicals and equipment. The work environment is usually industrial, with opportunities for collaboration and problem-solving across departments.
To thrive in Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection, candidates need a solid understanding of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, attention to detail, and usually a high school diploma or technical training in NDT. Familiarity with inspection tools, ultraviolet lighting equipment, and certifications such as ASNT Level I or II are typically required. Strong observation skills, effective communication, and the ability to work methodically make someone stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the detection of flaws in materials, upholding safety standards, and maintaining product quality in industrial settings.

• Works under minimal supervision
• Must achieve level II company issued certification
• Inspects precision metal fasteners and raw material samples for indications of discontinuities in machining and/or material by applying an oxide suspension and fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection solutions to fasteners and samples and examines them under black light
• Tests inspection equipment and materials to maintain quality control of inspection process
• Sets-up and calibrates NDT equipment
• Verifies that magnetic inspection equipment and materials are in proper condition and meet established standards by conducting various control tests.
• Obtains specific inspection assignments and determines work priorities by reading shop traveler cards on pans of fasteners located in backlog area and identifying orders that are ready for inspection.
• Verifies that orders of fasteners and shop traveler cards match by reading head markings of fasteners and comparing against part numbers of shop traveler cards.
• Obtains inspection criteria by referring to government and customer standards and specifications books. Prepares inspection record for each order.
• Verifies that samples are free of oil, and degreases samples as required by dipping pans into vapor degreaser.
• Prepares sample fasteners and samples of raw materials designated for magnetic inspection by adjusting chuck of magnaflux machine to hold samples and adjusts amps of magnaflux machine according to size configuration of samples. Actuates flow of ferrous oxide suspension solution to cover samples; places samples in magnaflux machine and "shoots" to magnetize.
• Prepares sample fasteners and samples of raw material for fluorescent penetrant inspection by degreasing, etching or otherwise cleaning parts as required; dips samples into fluorescent penetrant solution, sets aside to drain for specified time, then rinses in water for further removal of excess penetrant solution; verifies removal of excess penetrant solution by inspecting with black light; adjusts drying oven heat to specified temperature and places samples in oven for specified time; removes samples from oven, immerses into dry developer powder to develop residual penetrant.
• Inspects samples under black light to detect defects such as discontinuity of seams, thread laps, non-metallic and metallic inclusions, piping, grinding checks, cracks, etc.
• Submits samples of defective parts to lab for evaluation of depths of discontinuity.
• Segregates defective samples and places in separate box. Writes rejection slip, records inspection data in log. Pulls orders of defective fasteners from pallet, and forwards rejection slip to authorized personnel for disposition of defective fasteners.
• Demagnetizes acceptable samples (if magnetized), dips into solvent to remove residual inspection solution, dips into rust preventive, and returns to original pan. Stamps, signs and dates shop traveler card, and records inspection data in log, and moves pans of inspected parts to holding area.
• Submits samples of raw material to laboratory for further inspection and testing as required; may explain and demonstrate inspection procedures to customer representatives; may provide instruction or guidance to less experienced personnel assigned to help with inspection; may be required to perform dimensional inspections or work of other jobs at the same or a lower pay grade.
