What does a florist do?

As a florist, or floral designer, your primary job responsibilities are to create flower arrangements. Arrangements include bouquets, gift baskets, wreaths, centerpieces, and corsages. You may make arrangements for different events, such as gift baskets, holidays, funerals, weddings, and more. Other job duties include raising and caring for the flowers and other greenery used in your floral designs. Many florists help manage or run a business, so customer service skills are a must. Additional job qualifications include organizational, management, and plant identification skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a florist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Florist, you need expertise in floral design, plant care, and a good eye for color and composition, often gained through vocational training or on-the-job experience. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, floral arrangement tools, and sometimes floral design software is commonly required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong customer service skills help Florists stand out when crafting personalized arrangements and advising clients. These skills and qualities are essential for meeting customer expectations, maintaining product quality, and ensuring business success in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges florists face when managing large event orders?

Florists often encounter challenges such as coordinating delivery logistics, sourcing sufficient quantities of fresh flowers, and ensuring designs meet client expectations for large events like weddings or corporate gatherings. Managing time effectively and communicating clearly with event planners and vendors are crucial to avoid last-minute issues. Successful florists develop strong organizational skills and build reliable supplier relationships to handle these high-pressure situations smoothly.

Description
Floral Delivery Driver - Stem Studio
Moana Nursery Reno, Nevada
Moana Nursery's Stem Studio is looking for a dependable, energetic Floral Delivery Driver to help us deliver beautiful flowers and exceptional service throughout the Reno-Sparks area.
This position is much more than driving from Point A to Point B. Our Floral Delivery Driver is the final step in the customer experience. You'll carefully transport and deliver floral arrangements, plants and other special orders while representing Moana Nursery with professionalism, warmth and attention to detail.
When you're not on the road, you'll be an important part of our Stem Studio team, helping keep the department organized, stocked and ready for the day.
What You'll Do
Floral Delivery
  • Safely load, transport and deliver floral arrangements, bouquets, plants and related products.
  • Handle every arrangement with care to ensure it arrives fresh, beautiful and undamaged.
  • Review deliveries before leaving to ensure you have the correct products, cards, addresses and delivery information.
  • Plan and follow efficient delivery routes while meeting promised delivery windows.
  • Communicate promptly with the floral team when delivery issues arise, including difficulty locating an address, unavailable recipients or other unexpected circumstances.
  • Follow delivery instructions and document completed deliveries as required.
  • Provide friendly, professional customer service at every delivery.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the delivery vehicle.

Stem Studio Support
  • Assist the floral team between deliveries rather than simply waiting for the next route.
  • Help receive, unload and move flowers, plants, buckets, vases and floral supplies.
  • Assist with processing and conditioning incoming flowers as trained.
  • Keep workspaces, coolers, buckets and delivery areas clean and organized.
  • Help restock supplies and maintain an orderly Stem Studio.
  • Assist with basic floral production, preparation or other department tasks as trained.
  • Jump in wherever needed during busy periods, holidays and special events.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who is:
  • Dependable and punctual - our customers are counting on us.
  • Comfortable driving throughout Reno, Sparks and surrounding delivery areas.
  • Careful and conscientious when handling fragile products.
  • Friendly, professional and comfortable interacting with customers.
  • Organized and able to manage multiple deliveries efficiently.
  • Comfortable using a smartphone, GPS/navigation and basic delivery technology.
  • Able to work independently on the road while remaining connected and accountable to the team.
  • Willing to help with whatever needs to be done when not making deliveries.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can change quickly.
  • A team player who takes pride in leaving things better than they found them.

Floral experience is not required. We can teach flowers. Reliability, good judgment, a strong work ethic and a willingness to help are more important.
Schedule
Floral is a seven-day-a-week business, and our busiest times often occur around weekends and holidays. Weekend availability is important, and additional hours or schedule flexibility may be needed around major floral holidays including Valentine's Day and Mother's Day.
Why Stem Studio?
Stem Studio is Moana Nursery's fresh approach to floral - combining locally and regionally grown flowers, interesting seasonal materials and beautiful design with the horticultural roots of Moana Nursery.
We're building something different from a traditional flower shop, and we're looking for people who enjoy being part of a team, moving quickly, solving problems and helping create an exceptional experience from our worktable all the way to the customer's front door.
If you are looking for a career and not just a job this position might be right for you. There is plenty of opportunity to grow your career at Moana Nursery and this position is a great way to show us what you are about.
