At Hy-Vee, our floral department helps customers find the perfect arrangement for every occasion, and our Floral Clerks are a vital part of making those moments special. In this role, you'll assist customers with placing orders, create beginning-level floral designs, keep the department stocked and looking beautiful, and deliver the kind of warm, attentive service that keeps our customers coming back.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer with a smile and assisting them with placing floral orders in person or over the phone, including completing all required order paperwork

  • Prepare, finish, and replenish product including small floral and greenery arrangements, corsages and boutonnieres, roses, carnations, balloon bouquets, bows, and other floral items

  • Send and retrieve FTD, Teleflora, and computer orders; maintain confidentiality on all orders placed including sender, recipient, order details, and cost

  • Review floral products for freshness and anticipate daily product needs for the department

  • Water plants and maintain the overall appearance and cleanliness of the department including coolers, counters, floors, and sinks

  • Prepare the daily delivery list and deliver orders as needed

  • Unload trucks, place product in appropriate storage areas, check in product, put product away, and process invoices as needed

  • Run the department register, receive payment, and make change as applicable

  • Remove trash in a timely manner and assist with general department upkeep

  • Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call

  • Follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines

  • Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Your Skills

You don't need extensive experience for this role; we'll provide the training you need to succeed. To hit the ground running, you'll need to be able to:

  • Bring commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for helping customers

  • Solve practical problems and follow instructions carefully in a fast-paced environment

  • Apply math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages in day-to-day tasks

  • Communicate clearly with customers and co-workers and contribute positively to the team

  • Maintain confidentiality on customer order details including who sent, who received, and order contents

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Floral Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • Less than high school diploma or equivalent experience accepted

  • Six months of similar or related work experience preferred; we'll provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. You'll work primarily in a store environment and can expect exposure to dirt, noise, dampness, equipment movement hazards, electrical equipment, and cleaning chemicals and solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
