A Flooring Inspector evaluates the quality, installation, and condition of various flooring materials, such as hardwood, tile, carpet, and vinyl. They inspect for defects, improper installation, or damage caused by wear, moisture, or other factors. Flooring Inspectors often provide reports, recommendations, and expert opinions for homeowners, businesses, manufacturers, or insurance claims. Their role helps ensure flooring meets industry standards and can assist in resolving disputes or warranty claims.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flooring inspector?

To thrive as a Flooring Inspector, you need a solid understanding of flooring materials, installation methods, defect recognition, and building codes, often supported by industry certifications such as those from the National Institute of Certified Floorcovering Inspectors (NICFI) or similar. Familiarity with moisture meters, digital cameras, report-writing software, and standards like ASTM guidelines is crucial for accurate inspections and thorough documentation. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills stand out as valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering precise, credible inspection results, supporting clients with clear recommendations, and maintaining professional integrity.

What are the typical daily tasks and responsibilities of a flooring inspector?

The role frequently requires communicating your analysis and recommendations to homeowners, contractors, manufacturers, or insurance adjusters. Staying organized and up-to-date with industry standards is key, as each inspection may present new challenges and unique flooring issues.

How do you become a flooring inspector?

Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | QUALITY ENGINEERING INSPECTOR | Houston Metro

A well-established manufacturer of custom heating and cooling equipment for industrial and commercial customers is adding a Quality Engineering Inspector to its Houston-area production team. This is a newly created position built to bring structure and consistency to inspection, testing, and nonconformance tracking across the shop floor. The company runs lean manufacturing on its production line and needs someone who can learn the current process fast and start improving it.

  • Anticipated $30.00-$36.00+ /hr, based on experience
  • Full suite of benefits: Health/Dental/Vision, 401(k) with company match
  • PTO plus paid holidays
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM-4:30 PM, with occasional Saturday overtime during tight production deadlines

Overview

  • Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections on custom-fabricated equipment and components before they ship to the customer.
  • Own the nonconforming-material process end to end: identify issues, log them, and drive them to resolution.
  • Run quality checks at each stage of a multi-step production line using a digital checklist system, clearing units to move to the next stage.
  • Read engineering drawings and specifications to verify parts and assemblies meet requirements.
  • Use electrical and mechanical test equipment to confirm units perform to spec before release.
  • Help build out formal inspection documentation and reporting where none currently exists — this role shapes the process, not just follows it. Partner with production and engineering to reduce defects, rework, and repeat issues.

Skills & Experience

Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 3-5+ years of experience in quality inspection, quality engineering, testing, manufacturing, HVAC, metal fabrication, or a related industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Experience with quality systems, audits, NCRs (nonconformance reports), and quality documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and quality reporting systems.
  • Able to work Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM-4:30 PM, with occasional Saturday overtime as needed.

Ideal

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Quality, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, HVAC, or Electrical Technology.
  • Experience using electrical test equipment such as multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical systems, motors, controls, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Prior experience building or improving a quality inspection program from the ground up.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Preferred

  • ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT) or Certified Quality Inspector (CQI).
  • AWS welding-related certifications.
  • Familiarity with welding, brazing, fabrication, and assembly quality requirements.
  • Root cause analysis / corrective action (CAPA) experience.
