You should be comfortable reading and using various measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges, along with tape measures to ensure precise work. An ability to interpret slitter schedules and utilize shop-floor systems is also critical for effective communication and workflow.

Certifications for forklift and overhead crane operation are required. Furthermore, a strong understanding of safety protocols and the proper use of mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) is vital. You should be capable of lifting up to 100 lbs and familiar with quality and housekeeping standards. Basic computer proficiency for navigating business systems will enhance your effectiveness in this role.

SUMMARY: Utilize and operate equipment, material and tools in the inspection and production process for slitting. Oversee all slitting functions. Slitting master coils into respective slit coils of various blank widths for use on the mills. Responsible for safe operation of the slitter in capacity as slitter operator and all ancillary activities that support the production of quality slit coils for internal customers (mills 9 and 4). Complies with all safety, quality, customer focus, preventative maintenance and housekeeping standards. All other duties as assigned and expected.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the area in which the employee works is regularly exposed to moving mechanical equipment, parts and vibration. The area in which the employee works can be exposed to heat/cold conditions. The noise levels are mitigated by use of PPE hearing protection. The building temperatures vary, ranging from cold in the winter months to temperate summer climes. There is increased exposure to temperature in winter due to doors open to admit incoming trucks in the receiving bay. There are two 10 mil BTU heaters at either end of the plant, as well as, stationed gas infrared heating

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): The PPE described here is mandatory while an employee is on the plant floor performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to wears at all times-hard hat, safety glasses, earplugs, metatarsal boots and Kevlar cut-resistant gloves while handling tubing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand for several hours (up to 8-12 hours); use hands and fingers to manipulate, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk; talk or hear; stoop; kneel; and crouch; The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds; frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Rarely will an employee have to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color recognition, and ability to adjust focus. The essential functions of this classification include performing the following tasks:

  1. Read and apply micrometer, caliper, gages and tape measure
  2. Read and interpret slitter schedule. Understand and use shop floor system
  3. Select proper master coils to match slitter schedule
  4. Enter master coils into slitter
  5. Use of coil car, turnstile and controls for all slitter equipment
  6. Operation of all coil entry equipment and controls
  7. Proper threading of coil(s) through slitter head to re coiler.
  8. Un banding procedure
  9. Proper banding of coils
  10. Slitter setup:

Proper setup of head to match schedule; set up of rubbers, spacers, knives

  1. Proper setup of over arm and under arm separator shafts
  2. Complete knowledge of Company Safety Rules and precautions
  3. Complete knowledge of Company quality requirements
  4. Complete knowledge of Company housekeeping rules
  5. Ability to run forklift and overhead crane

OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Maintain regular and reliable attendance
  2. Work cooperatively with others to ensure constructive and productive business relationships
  3. Comply with all Company policies and procedures
  4. Be able to understand and effectively use computerized business systems and other technology and business platforms
