Their duties often include filing documents, preparing correspondence, managing schedules, and supporting multiple attorneys with various administrative tasks. This role requires flexibility, strong organizational skills, and the ability to quickly adapt to different practice areas and work styles. Floating Legal Assistants are essential for maintaining workflow continuity, especially during staff absences or busy periods.

How does a floating legal assistant adapt to working with multiple attorneys or practice areas?

As a Floating Legal Assistant, you'll support different attorneys and practice groups as needed, which requires flexibility and strong organizational skills. Adapting quickly to varying work styles, case management systems, and procedural requirements is key to success in this role. To thrive as a Floating Legal Assistant, you need a solid understanding of legal procedures, document preparation, and administrative processes, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with legal management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and case management systems is often required. These skills are crucial because the role demands flexibility, accuracy, and efficient multitasking to ensure smooth legal operations across various practice areas.

You will also explain court forms and processes, and answer customer questions. As needed, you will provide additional assistance with forms completion, and review completed forms to check for common errors and/or missing information.
Our customers represent a cross-section of our community, in terms of socio-economic backgrounds, race, ethnicity, culture, and national origin. They have widely varying levels of education, English proficiency, and understanding of our legal system. Some of our customers are experiencing high levels of stress and traumatic life events (including domestic violence and houselessness). They may be frustrated with court outcomes or confused about the next steps in their case. The ideal candidate for this position wants to make a positive impact in our community;, values OJD's mission, and its efforts to increase access to justice services;, and enjoys working with the public. Working in a field that is constantly evolving as laws and procedures change, our facilitators must be adaptable, inquisitive, and willing to learn.
