How much do flight scheduler jobs pay per hour?
What is a flight scheduler?
A Flight Scheduler is responsible for planning and coordinating aircraft schedules to ensure efficient operations. They manage flight plans, crew assignments, and airport slot allocations while considering factors like weather, aircraft maintenance, and regulatory requirements. Flight Schedulers work closely with pilots, air traffic controllers, and dispatchers to adjust schedules as needed. Their role is crucial in minimizing delays and optimizing airline or charter operations.
What are the typical challenges flight schedulers face in their day-to-day responsibilities?
Flight Schedulers often manage last-minute changes due to weather, maintenance issues, or crew availability, requiring them to adapt quickly and make decisions under time constraints. Coordinating schedules across multiple time zones and ensuring compliance with aviation regulations can also be complex and demanding. Despite these challenges, working closely with pilots, dispatchers, and operations staff provides great opportunities to develop teamwork and leadership skills. Success in this role often comes from being proactive, staying organized, and continually learning about industry best practices.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the flight scheduler position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Flight Scheduler, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and a background in aviation or logistics, often supported by relevant education or certifications. Familiarity with flight planning software, FAA regulations, and scheduling systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well under pressure are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient flight operations, regulatory compliance, and effective coordination among flight crews and operational teams.

- Identify and track key project milestones and interdependencies among internal and external project activities to achieve mission objectives.
- Prepare and maintain the Schedule Management Plan (SMP) to define the requirements for monitoring and control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate with project resource analysts and risk managers to ensure seamless cost, schedule, and risk integration within the IMS.
- Develop Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and schedule hierarchies to ensure full vertical and horizontal traceability of project tasks.
Basic Qualifications
- Strong analytical skills with knowledge of prototype manufacturing, flight hardware development, testing, and space flight project management.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and specialized scheduling tools including MS Project and Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate successfully with all levels of technical and project management.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time, prioritize work, and meet rigorous government reporting deadlines in a fast-paced team environment.
- PMI Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) or Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) certification is highly desired.
- Must meet government and citizenship or permanent residency requirements for access to NASA assets.
