Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Netflix seeks a Manager/Counsel to join the Business and Legal Affairs team for Nonfiction Series, to handle a wide array of responsibilities related to the acquisition, development, and production of Netflix's Nonfiction slate (i.e, documentary and unscripted series and podcasts). The successful candidate will primarily oversee business and legal affairs facets of in-house and third-party productions, and will be an integral part of the Nonfiction Business and Legal Affairs team, also working closely with the entire Nonfiction cross-functional team (e.g., Content, Production, Finance, Marketing).

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate should have at least seven (7) years of business and legal affairs experience in the development, production and licensing of nonfiction content, with direct experience negotiating and drafting deal terms and all forms of agreements, including production services agreements, above-the-line and below-the-line agreements, format licenses, option agreements and production forms. They should be extremely comfortable dealing directly with productions, producers and talent representatives, as well as communicating across myriad departments within the company.

They need to be ready, willing, and able to work independently and own all facets of production legal, including: drafting and negotiating various agreements, overseeing production-legal and clearance issues and providing general business and legal affairs and production counsel support for the Nonfiction team's projects. Experience providing in-house support, or as outside production counsel, for a network, streaming service, or a production company that specializes in nonfiction programming is preferred. The successful candidate should have knowledge of substantive areas of the law and customary business practices relevant to nonfiction productions.

A successful candidate will also possess the following:

  • J.D. (or international equivalent) and membership in good standing in at least one state bar is required.

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment.

  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably under tight timeframes in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solution-oriented.

  • Willingness and curiosity to tackle matters outside of expertise.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off. See more details about our Benefits here.
