Flexible Structural Packaging Design information

What is flexible structural packaging design?

Flexible structural packaging design refers to the creation and development of packaging solutions made from pliable materials like films, foils, and laminates, rather than rigid materials such as glass or hard plastics. This type of packaging is used for products that require lightweight, durable, and adaptable containers, such as snacks, beverages, or personal care items. Designers in this field focus on both the functional structure and the visual appearance of the package, ensuring it protects the product, enhances shelf appeal, and meets manufacturing requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible structural packaging designer?

To thrive as a Flexible Structural Packaging Designer, you need expertise in materials science, packaging engineering, and design principles, often supported by a degree in packaging or industrial design. Proficiency with CAD software, packaging prototyping tools, and knowledge of industry standards like ISO or ASTM is typically required. Strong creativity, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set outstanding designers apart in collaborating with cross-functional teams and clients. These skills and qualifications are essential for developing innovative, functional, and cost-effective packaging solutions that meet both customer needs and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in flexible structural packaging design and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Flexible Structural Packaging Design often encounter challenges such as balancing innovative design with material limitations, meeting sustainability goals, and ensuring manufacturability at scale. Working closely with cross-functional teams—including marketing, production, and sustainability experts—can help address these issues. Staying updated on the latest materials and regulations, as well as actively participating in prototyping and testing processes, ensures designs are both creative and feasible. Being adaptable and having strong communication skills are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering successful packaging solutions.

In this role, you will primarily work in a structural engineering design capacity, providing technical support to various internal and external customers. This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with in-house engineers, external consultants, and in-house fabrication personnel while developing engineering solutions for short to medium span pedestrian and vehicular bridge projects for national clients.

What We Offer:

  • Hands on Engineering Environment:  We fabricate our bridge designs in-house which provides a unique engineering environment.  Our engineers are encouraged to leave their offices and spend time on the shop floor collaborating with welders, saw/plasma operators, and shop quality personnel every day.
  • Work-Life Balance: We understand the importance of achieving your professional goals without compromising your personal life.
  • Career Growth: Join an industry leader known for its world-class design, manufacturing, sourcing, and distribution, and take your career to new heights.

  • Structural Analysis: Perform structural analysis and design of bridge elements, including superstructures, foundations, and retaining walls.
  • Collaboration: Work effectively with in-house engineers, CAD Techs, Sales/Marketing Team members, and outside engineers to specify and design Contech's products.
  • Technical Support: Offer technical support to the Operations/Manufacturing Team to ensure proper fabrication of products.
  • Communication: Coordinate with field sales staff and the manufacturing team to address questions and concerns regarding product design, manufacturing, and installation. You will also provide technical advice to the sales/marketing team and external consultants.
  • Quality Control: Review design work produced by other team members to ensure accuracy.  Inspect and observe in-house fabrication for adherence to design drawings.
  • Standards and Training: Maintain engineering standards, policies, best practices, and procedures. Help develop training programs and aids for products.
  • Documentation: Assist in the development and writing of technical papers and product literature needed for the support and promotion of Contech's products.
