Job description

We are seekinga Gunsmith to join the Orvis Team! This is a 30-40 hour onsite position at Orvis Sandanona in Millbrook NY. One weekend day per week and attending multiple-day special events is mandatory.
The Orvis Gunsmith works closely with the Orvis Gun Department Manager to complete all manner of gun repairs and restoration, inspection of consignment firearms, and service of Orvis-owned sporting arms. Additionally, the Orvis Gunsmith assists all Orvis Shooting Grounds in the support of customers who seek to buy a new or used gun, consign a gun, or accomplish gun repairs through Orvis. The Orvis Gunsmith is an authoritative resource, and an Associate who embodies the Orvis commitment to unrivaled product and service.

The ideal candidate for the Orvis Gunsmith role will bring a sound understanding of the mechanics, functioning, and repair of sporting shotguns, hunting shotguns, and hunting rifles. The candidate will be driven to grow repair revenue and support gun sales while ensuring that Orvis remains a trusted and knowledgeable resource for new and existing gun customers. The candidate will be a strong collaborator and an initiative-taking individual worker who is flexible enough to move seamlessly from the bench to the sales floor when asked. He or she will have familiarity with Excel, Word, and Smartsheet applications, will be willing to travel to Orvis Shooting Facilities and Caesar Guerni/FABARM USA, and will be willing to engage in the Federal Firearms License record keeping process. Fundamentally, the candidate will have a desire to work with internal and external customers to ensure 100% satisfaction and a world-class customer experience at every step of the repair process.

Position Interfaces:
The Orvis Gunsmith will report directly to the Orvis Gun Department Manager and collaborate closely with the General Manager at Orvis Sandanona. The Orvis Gunsmith will also have regular interaction with the Orvis Adventures Analyst, Sandanona Gunroom Administrator, the gunsmith assistant, and the entire staff at Orvis Sandanona.
Responsibilities:
  • All manner of repairs on modern and vintage boxlock, sidelock, pump-action, and semi-automatic shotguns, as well as traditional single-shot, pump-action, bolt-action, and lever-action rifles.
  • Stock and Woodwork including stock bending, refinishing, checkering, lengthening, shortening, and the application of rubber and leather-covered recoil pads.
  • Machining and manufacture or retrofitting of firing pins, draw bolts, basic screws, and springs. Aptitude with lathe and milling machine, and common machine tools.
  • Evaluation of pre-owned or vintage guns to determine safety, functionality, and value.
  • Maintenance of Federal Firearms License Repair and New Guns Sales book
  • Maintenance of repair Smartsheet and repair billing
  • Familiarity with major brands carried by Orvis, namely FABARM/Guerini/Syren, Beretta, Browning, and Rizzini
  • Familiarity with major brands historically sold by Orvis, namely Beretta 680 platform, Arrieta, Grulla, AYA, Ruger

  • Success will be measured by positive customer feedback, recorded turnaround time for repair, maintenance and cleanliness of shop workspace and tools, and 3% increased repair revenue by year two.
