Job description

Job Title: Rolling Mill Machine Operator - 3rd Shift - $21-28/hr 10pm-6am Sun-Thu

Job Description

This on-site role in Wheeling, IL focuses on safely and efficiently operating a rolling mill in a high-volume industrial environment. Working closely with another operator, you will run the rolling mill according to established metallurgical guidelines, maintain production schedules, perform material handling and tooling changeovers, and support preventive maintenance activities while ensuring consistent product quality and adherence to safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the rolling mill safely and efficiently with safety as the top priority, following all company and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Work independently and as part of a team, promptly bringing safety or operational issues to the attention of supervision, safety, or HR.
  • Safely operate equipment on and around the rolling mill, including performing coil changeovers and roll changes (work and backup rolls).
  • Monitor the quality of material running through the rolling mill and perform basic maintenance on associated equipment.
  • Handle materials throughout the process, including loading and unloading coils onto the machine using appropriate equipment.
  • Set up the rolling mill and associated equipment for production runs according to established guidelines and specifications.
  • Follow the production schedule developed by the Planning Department and adjust as needed to meet throughput and delivery requirements.
  • Perform frontline troubleshooting of the rolling mill and associated equipment, and communicate needs or issues to Production Management and Maintenance as they arise.
  • Conduct in-process inspections, prepare and visually inspect samples for quality assurance, and take actions to reduce scrap and maintain material quality.
  • Monitor material quality characteristics such as flatness, gauge, hardness, grain size, and surface finish, and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Ensure proper identification, labeling, and handling of coils and samples throughout the production process.
  • Maintain production throughput, yield, and scrap goals by following standard operating procedures and best practices.
  • Cross-train in other areas of the Production Department and train other employees on rolling mill operation as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area in accordance with applicable regulations and company standards.
  • Support and sustain 5S improvements, including organization, cleanliness, and visual management of the work area.
  • Cooperate with other departments to continuously improve quality, machine uptime, efficiency, and overall productivity.
  • Work on short notice when required and participate in voluntary or required overtime to support production needs.
  • Maintain a positive, collaborative attitude in a team environment while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of industrial skilled machine experience.
  • Experience operating production or roll forming machinery in an industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints to support machine setup and quality verification.
  • Proficiency using calipers, micrometers, and other types of testing and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to monitor material quality, including flatness, gauge, hardness, grain size, and surface finish.
  • Capability to work under pressure and in high-stress production environments while maintaining focus on safety and quality.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and safely operate an overhead crane, forklift, and pallet equipment (motorized and manual).
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure proper identification and tracking of coils and samples.
  • Ability to follow and maintain production schedules and meet throughput, yield, and scrap targets.
  • Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods and negotiate stairs, ladders, elevated catwalks, and platforms in hot or cold conditions.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Commitment to following all required personal protective equipment (PPE) practices, including use of safety glasses, electrostatic discharge jackets, earplugs, and other equipment as required.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a positive attitude in a team environment.

  • Experience with roll forming or rolling mill operations.
  • Familiarity with 5S or similar workplace organization and continuous improvement programs.
  • Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment with strict safety and quality requirements.
  • Comfort working with production planning systems and following detailed schedules.
  • Willingness to work 3rd shift and adapt to changing production demands, including short-notice assignments and overtime.
  • Interest in cross-training across multiple production areas to broaden skills and support flexible staffing.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new equipment and processes and contributing ideas for process improvements.

Work Environment

This position is based fully on-site in an industrial production facility in Wheeling, IL. You will work in a rolling mill environment that includes exposure to hot and cold conditions, slippery surfaces, and elevated work areas such as stairs, ladders, catwalks, and platforms. The role involves extended periods of standing and walking while overseeing operations and evaluating situations on the production floor. You will use industrial equipment such as rolling mills, overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet equipment, and various measuring tools including calipers and micrometers. Personal protective equipment is required and may include safety glasses, electrostatic discharge jackets, earplugs, and other PPE as appropriate. The position follows a 3rd shift schedule, Monday through Thursday, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with overtime opportunities as needed to support production demands.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $28.00/hr.
