What is a flexible remote payroll?

A flexible remote payroll job involves managing payroll processes—such as calculating wages, processing payments, and ensuring tax compliance—for a company, all while working from a location of your choice. The 'flexible' aspect typically refers to adjustable work hours or schedules, allowing employees to balance personal and professional commitments. This role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency with payroll software, and knowledge of relevant labor laws. Remote payroll professionals often communicate with HR and finance departments virtually to ensure accurate and timely payments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a flexible remote payroll specialist?

To thrive as a Flexible Remote Payroll Specialist, you need strong knowledge of payroll processes, tax regulations, and attention to detail, typically supported by experience in payroll or accounting and relevant certifications such as FPC or CPP. Familiarity with payroll software like ADP, Paychex, or QuickBooks, as well as secure remote communication tools, is essential. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and the ability to communicate clearly with both employees and management are standout soft skills. These skills ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with legal requirements, and effective remote collaboration.

What are common challenges faced when working as a flexible remote payroll professional, and how can they be managed?

A common challenge in a flexible remote payroll role is maintaining accuracy and compliance while managing multiple payroll cycles across different regions or time zones. Communication with HR and finance teams can also be more complex without in-person interactions, so clear documentation and regular virtual check-ins are essential. Utilizing up-to-date payroll software and staying informed about relevant regulations can help streamline processes and reduce errors. Proactively setting up secure channels for data sharing and dedicating time for continuous learning are also key strategies for success in this role.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Director, Global Payroll to lead our payroll  & HRIS organization, with a primary focus on managing US Payroll — including regular bi-weekly payroll, off-cycle runs, and incentive payrolls. This role requires deep expertise in US payroll tax to ensure we remain current and compliant across all tax jurisdictions, along with strong Excel skills and comfort working with large, complex datasets. You will bring a strategic mindset focused on building scalable processes, driving partnership and accountability with key stakeholders across Finance, Accounting, HR Business Partners, Compensation, and Treasury.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and process US payroll operations, including bi-weekly payroll, off-cycle runs, and incentive payrolls
  • Maintain deep expertise in US payroll tax regulations to keep the company current and compliant across all applicable tax jurisdictions
  • Partner with the Benefits team to process life event changes impacting employee contributions and benefit eligibility
  • Process off-cycle payouts, including severance, spot bonuses, and COBRA reimbursements
  • Oversee payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees, including validating hours worked and time card approvals
  • Prepare and validate W-2s, and manage annual and quarterly tax filings in partnership with ADP
  • Respond to unemployment insurance claims, wage validation requests, and wage garnishments
  • Leverage advanced Excel skills to manage, analyze, and troubleshoot large, complex payroll datasets
  • Build scalable payroll processes and drive accountability through partnership with Finance, Accounting, HR Business Partners, Compensation, and Treasury
  • Maintain compliance with local payroll practices across EU markets — including the UK, Germany, Italy, and France (all operating under a PEO model) — as well as Moldova, Serbia, and China
  • Lead all HRIS data integrity, process flows and data reporting, leveraging AI for scaling HR processes and creating executive dashboards, analytics and insights

Skills & Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience, including senior leadership responsibility
  • Proven ability to lead a major function or department
  • Strategic planning and long-range execution experience
  • Strong financial and operational management capabilities
  • Experience developing leaders and succession planning
  • Executive-level presentation and influence skills

Benefits:

  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays and Floating Holidays
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA, HSA with employer contribution, Life Insurance and Pet Insurance
  • 401k with Employer Match
  • Take up to 2 Days of Paid Time Off to Volunteer with a 501c Organization
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Company-subsidized membership to Wellhub and Peloton
  • Fertility and family-building information platform through Carrot

The annual base salary range for this position is $130,000-160,000 USD. The actual salary will vary depending on the applicant's experience, skills, and abilities as well as internal equity and market data for their location. This position is also eligible for an additional annual bonus compensation through one of Pacvue's highly attractive incentive plans, full details will be provided during the recruitment process.
