Job Summary:
The Scraper Operator is responsible for safely operating and maintaining self-propelled or pull-type scrapers to perform mass earthmoving, excavation, grading, and material hauling in support of heavy civil construction and industrial services projects. This position requires expertise in scraper operation, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work efficiently with GPS machine control systems and project teams to achieve production and grading objectives.
  • Safely operate self-propelled or pull-type scrapers to excavate, load, haul, spread, and place earth and other materials in accordance with project specifications.
  • Utilize GPS machine control and 3D satellite technology (Topcon, Trimble, or similar) to maintain design grades, elevations, and alignments during earthmoving operations.
  • Perform mass grading, cut-and-fill operations, embankment construction, and site preparation while maintaining required tolerances.
  • Read and interpret project plans, grading plans, blueprints, and digital grade models to complete assigned work accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspections and routine preventive maintenance, reporting equipment deficiencies or repair needs promptly.
  • Monitor machine performance and make adjustments to maximize production while minimizing equipment wear.
  • Coordinate with grade checkers, survey crews, foremen, and other equipment operators to maintain efficient workflow and project schedules.
  • Safely load, haul, dump, and spread materials while maintaining proper haul routes and traffic patterns.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project-specific safety requirements.

Requirements and Education:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating scrapers on heavy civil, site development, highway, or large earthwork projects.
  • Experience operating GPS-equipped scrapers utilizing Topcon, Trimble, Leica, or similar machine control systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance to access secure facilities, including military bases.
  • Strong knowledge of scraper operating techniques, including efficient loading, hauling, dumping, spreading, and maintaining proper grade.
  • Understanding of mass excavation, cut-and-fill balancing, embankment construction, and finish grading operations.
  • Ability to interpret grading plans, blueprints, specifications, cut/fill maps, and digital terrain models.
  • Knowledge of equipment safety procedures, preventative maintenance practices, and daily equipment inspections.
  • Ability to recognize and troubleshoot basic equipment or GPS machine control issues and report problems appropriately.
  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, earthwork sequencing, and site logistics.
  • Excellent attention to detail while maintaining production goals and grade tolerances.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with supervisors, survey personnel, and other equipment operators.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate work activities and follow project instructions.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and spatial awareness.
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Requirements and Education:
  • Certification in heavy equipment operation is preferred.

Working Environment and Conditions:
  • Works primarily outdoors at construction sites, exposed to various weather conditions.
  • May encounter hazardous materials or other safety considerations.
