Position Summary
The Union Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of personnel, property, and operations within a terminal environment. This position involves enforcing access control procedures, monitoring facility activity, and responding to incidents in accordance with established protocols. The role requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently across various shifts and weather conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Enforces facility access control by verifying identification credentials (e.g., TWIC, driver's license, passport) of visitors, vendors, passengers, and crew using handheld scanners and visual inspection procedures.
  • Conducts routine inspections of facility doors, gates, fences, and restricted areas to ensure they are secure and compliant with the Facility Security Plan.
  • Monitors and operates entry points by opening, closing, and observing gates and doors using manual controls and surveillance systems.
  • Documents daily activities and incidents in detailed written reports using company reporting software and logs.
  • Responds to security incidents or safety concerns by assessing the situation, notifying appropriate personnel, and following emergency protocols.
  • Communicates effectively with team members, supervisors, and external personnel using two-way radios and in-person briefings to relay instructions and updates.
  • Delivers professional customer service to clients, terminal employees, vendors, and ship crew by providing directions, answering questions, and resolving minor complaints in accordance with training guidelines.
  • Supports safety culture by identifying hazards, reporting unsafe conditions, and modeling safe work practices during all duties.
  • Inspects work areas for compliance with safety, maintenance, and security regulations using checklists and visual assessments.
  • Maintains accurate timekeeping by logging hours and time-off in payroll software according to company procedures.
  • Safeguard Sensitive Security Information (SSI) by storing documents securely and limiting access to authorized personnel only.
  • Attends required training sessions to maintain certifications and stay current on security procedures and regulations.
  • Reports personnel updates such as changes in address or contact information to management for recordkeeping accuracy.
  • Works flexible shifts, including holidays and weekends, as scheduled by the supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Security Supervisor.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Experience in customer service, security, or other fast-paced environments is helpful but not required.
  • Licenses: Ability to obtain and maintain (in accordance with state, county, or city regulations):
    • Valid State Driver's License.
    • Guard Card.
    • Valid TWIC card.
  • Age: Must be at least 23 years old.
  • Knowledge:
    • Understanding of basic safety and security procedures, including access control and identification verification.
    • Familiarity with reporting protocols and documentation standards.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English for safety communication, coordination, and incident reporting.
    • Ability to follow instructions and procedures with attention to detail.
    • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
    • Basic computer and written communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer service.

Preferred:
  • Additional Experiences:
    • Background in law enforcement, military service, or maritime security.
    • Experience working in regulated or high-traffic environments.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with Facility Security Plans (FSP) and maritime security protocols.
  • Skills: Conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Physical Demands: This role requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods, including frequent movement between work areas. Guards must inspect identification documents, operate radios and surveillance equipment, and communicate clearly. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds may be required. Visual focus and basic computer and writing skills are essential. Final candidates must successfully complete a background check and drug screening, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
  • Work Environment: Work is performed in both indoor security stations and outdoor terminal areas. Conditions may include exposure to weather, noise, and active operational zone environment. Personal protective equipment (PPE) and uniforms is provided and required as needed.
