Role Objectives: The primary responsibility of the Training Coordinator is to develop and deliver training to vessel crews within the ports of Lake Charles, LA and Point Comfort, TX. This role works directly with management to ensure all crew members are properly trained, compliant with regulations, and equipped to perform safely and effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage employee training comprehensively, including policy development, Learning Management System (LMS) administration, delivery of training programs, shipboard drills, coordination with formal schools, and credentialing processes.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously update company training policies and procedures to align with USCG, STCW, OSHA, ISM, and internal safety standards.
  • Administer and maintain the company’s Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring accurate tracking, reporting, and accessibility of all training records for auditors, management, and crew.
  • Plan, schedule, and deliver (or coordinate) both classroom and practical training sessions on technical, safety, and operational topics.
  • Organize and oversee shipboard drills, including emergency response, firefighting, man-overboard, towing safety, and environmental response exercises to maintain crew readiness.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate enrollment in formal external schools and courses (e.g., maritime academies, simulator training, towing & escort programs, leadership development).
  • Manage the full credentialing process, including tracking, renewal, and verification of USCG licenses, STCW endorsements, medical certificates, TWIC cards, and other required qualifications.
  • Track training completion, compliance, and effectiveness; generate reports for management and regulatory bodies.
  • Conduct new-hire orientation and onboarding training focused on company policies, vessel operations, and safety culture.
  • Assess training gaps through incident reviews, performance evaluations, and operational feedback; design targeted programs to address them.
  • Collaborate with vessel managers, port captains, and safety teams to ensure training supports current fleet operations and future needs.
  • Stay current with regulatory changes, industry best practices, and emerging training technologies to keep programs relevant and effective.
  • Support internal audits and USCG inspections related to training documentation and crew qualifications.
Operational & Safety Support
  • Assist in the management and dispatch of harbor tug operations in Lake Charles, LA and Point Comfort, TX.
  • Assist in regulatory compliance inspections.
  • Investigate accidents to determine root cause and corrective action, while minimizing risk or hazard to people, property, and the environment. Incorporate lessons learned into employee training and safety/operations programs.
  • Regularly visit locations, personnel, equipment, and local customers including port directors and pilots.
  • Conduct routine vessel audits.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Strong management, organizational, and operational skills.
  • Highly competent with computers and proficient in Microsoft Office and LMS platforms.
  • Eagerness to contribute to the efficient operation of harbor tugs, facilities, and staff.
  • Familiarity with personnel equipment used on harbor tugs to complete their intended tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • US Citizen or valid work permit to work in the US.
  • Current TWIC card required.
  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) is preferred.
Education & Experience:
  • Some college education preferred, with emphasis on management, safety, or maritime operations.
  • Minimum of 10 years working in marine operations onboard vessels.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a management role within the maritime industry. 

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in both an office environment and across various regions of the Gulf Coast.
  • Frequent vessel visits; occasional shipyard visits required.
  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders, descend stairs, step over bulwarks, and crawl into accessible spaces.
  • Ability to carry up to 50 lbs, maneuver in tight or unlit shipboard quarters, and sail as an observer aboard harbor tugs.
  • A background check will be required. The hired applicant will be subject to periodic drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy.
