Job description

The Greenville News, part of the USA Today Network, seeks a dynamic and curious food, dining & entertainment reporter to cover the vibrant and rapidly evolving culinary and cultural scene in Greenville and across Upstate South Carolina.
This role is ideal for a storyteller who is equally passionate about uncovering hidden dining gems, analyzing food trends, and capturing the energy of the region’s arts and entertainment landscape.
The reporter will create multimedia food, dining, and entertainment content that informs our audience of breaking news, restaurant openings and closings, industry trends, and things to do through videos, photos, and stories.
Greenville's food and dining scene continues to grow, earning regional and national recognition, including Michelin-rated and recommended restaurants. As the Upstate's cultural hub, the city offers a robust calendar of major events and happenings.  The reporter must be ready to balance quick-hit stories with deeper features and enterprise work.
This role also requires consistent audience engagement through tactics such as polls, experiential video, and social media.
Greenville is located in the northwestern part of the state, in the Upstate, near the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains midway between Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, along the Interstate 85 corridor.
Responsibilities:
  • Report and write engaging, accurate, and timely stories on restaurants, chefs, bars, breweries, and food trends across the Upstate.
  • Cover entertainment beats including live music, festivals, theater, and local cultural events.
  • Develop original feature ideas, profiles, and investigative pieces that reflect the diversity and growth of the region.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local restaurateurs, chefs, artists, and community leaders.
  • Produce multimedia content, including social media posts, short-form video, and photo-driven stories.
  • Contribute to dining guides, event roundups, and “best of” lists.
  • Stay ahead of emerging trends in food, hospitality, and entertainment.
  • Use metrics and analytics to grow audience, engagement and digital subscriptions.
  • Work extended hours when necessary, including evenings, weekends and holidays as news happens.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of reporting experience, preferably covering food, dining, or entertainment.
  • Strong writing, reporting, and interviewing skills with a distinctive voice.
  • Knowledge of or strong interest in Greenville and Upstate South Carolina’s food and cultural scene.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed for events coverage.
  • Experience with digital publishing tools, social media platforms, and basic multimedia production.
  • Mastery of SEO and social media and using it to promote your work and interact with readers.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, sources and the community.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
