Pay Range: $21 - $25hr

The Corporate Coding Specialist is responsible for supporting accurate, compliant, and timely coding practices across the organization's behavioral health programs and facilities. This position reviews clinical documentation and medical records, assigns appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes, identifies documentation gaps, and supports coding quality and reimbursement accuracy.

The Corporate Coding Specialist works collaboratively with clinical, billing, revenue cycle, utilization management, and health information management teams to promote consistent coding standards across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Review medical records and clinical documentation to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with applicable coding guidelines.
• Apply appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding principles based on services provided and documentation available.
• Review behavioral health documentation for completeness, accuracy, and coding support.
• Ensure coding is supported by appropriate clinical documentation and organizational policies.
• Identify coding discrepancies, documentation deficiencies, and potential compliance concerns.
• Communicate with clinical and administrative staff regarding documentation requirements and coding questions.
• Assist with coding audits and quality reviews across behavioral health locations.
• Maintain consistent coding practices across programs, facilities, and service lines.
• Research coding guidelines and payer requirements when necessary.
• Support the identification and correction of coding errors that may affect claims, reimbursement, or compliance.
• Collaborate with Revenue Cycle Management and Billing teams to resolve coding-related claim issues and denials.
• Assist with internal and external audits and provide requested coding documentation.
• Monitor changes to coding guidelines, payer requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
• Participate in the development and maintenance of coding procedures, workflows, and educational materials.
• Provide coding education and clarification to clinical and administrative staff as assigned.
• Maintain accurate records of coding audits, findings, corrections, and recommendations.
• Protect confidential patient information and maintain compliance with HIPAA and organizational privacy policies.
• Participate in quality improvement and compliance initiatives.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Behavioral Health Coding Responsibilities

• Apply coding knowledge appropriate to behavioral health services, including mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
• Review documentation related to psychiatric evaluations, psychotherapy, medication management, treatment programs, and other behavioral health services.
• Identify inconsistencies between documentation and assigned codes and communicate findings appropriately.
• Support accurate coding for different levels of behavioral health care and service settings.
• Maintain awareness of behavioral health-specific documentation, payer, and coding requirements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree or formal education in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.
• Professional coding certification such as CPC, CCS, CCA, or equivalent preferred or required based on organizational standards.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional medical coding experience preferred.
• Behavioral health coding experience strongly preferred.
• Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, clinical documentation, and healthcare reimbursement processes.
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive health information.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records, coding systems, and Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience coding behavioral health or substance use disorder services.
• Experience with multi-site or corporate healthcare organizations.
• Experience performing coding audits or quality assurance reviews.
• Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payer, and other applicable reimbursement requirements.
• Experience working with Revenue Cycle Management, HIM, Compliance, or Clinical Documentation Improvement teams.
• Familiarity with electronic health record systems commonly used in behavioral health.
