The Wills Eye Surgery Center in Cherry Hill is the flagship of the Wills Eye Surgical Network. The first ambulatory surgery center to carry the Wills Eye name, the Surgery Center in Cherry Hill opened its doors in July 1995. The physicians, nurses and support staff have dedicated themselves to achieving the highest standards of excellence for each of the more than 12,500 procedures conducted at the center. The Wills Eye Surgery Center in Cherry Hill is fully licensed by the State of New Jersey, AAAHC accredited, and Medicare certified.

Primary Function:

  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or Physician, the OR Technologist maintains medical instruments, supplies and all other materials needed during surgical procedures. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during operative procedures and is responsible for maintenance of the sterile field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. In conjunction with the registered nurse, ensures that all required items (implants and supplies) are in place prior to scheduled operative cases.
  2. Assists in selecting and assembling instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures utilizing Universal Precautions; maintains aseptic techniques (gowning, gloving, surgical scrub, and OR suite traffic control).
  3. Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and supplies and ensures proper protection when transporting to sterile processing.
  4. Assists in transporting patients, case carts and equipment prior to and after completion of each surgical case.
  5. Participates in OR suite turn around by assisting in cleaning and case cart management (spraying of enzymatic solution) between surgical procedures.
  6. Ensures the proper handling of specimens and cultures in accordance with hospital procedures and best practices.
  7. Demonstrates ability to deliver safe and accurate care to patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse/physician.
  8. Provides patient support during the administration of anesthesia.
  9. Assists with opening sterile supplies in preparation for surgical procedures.
  10. Under the supervision of the physician or registered nurse, assists in positioning patient during surgical procedures.
  11. Maintains an awareness of the surgical procedure to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  12. Actively participates in OR quality initiatives.
  13. Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peers, managers and other members of the health care team.
  14. Avoids repeating rumors or soliciting unfounded statements, keeps personal biases to oneself, maintain positive image.
  15. Receives constructive feedback in a positive self-develop-mental manner.
  16. Functions as an effective team member.
  17. Demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, and accountability when changes are made in job description and responsibility, including performing all qualified duties throughout other areas of the hospital.
  18. Strives to maintain the confidentiality of all patients and their families/significant other(s).
