Job description

Job Summary:

The On-Call Flex Security Officer provides supplemental security coverage in a retail environment by filling shifts due to call-offs, vacations, staffing shortages, and peak business needs. This position is not a regularly scheduled role and does not guarantee hours. Flex Officers serve as a critical support function to maintain safe and secure operations when primary staff are unavailable.

This role requires adaptability and reliability, as shifts may be offered on short notice. Officers are not expected to be available 24/7 butmust provide designated days and time ranges during which they are available to be contacted and report to work if needed.

Provide security detail as outlined in the post orders and establish working relationships with customers, local law enforcement and fire departments. Security personnel will always perform job duties with a constant awareness of surroundings, making note of all activity that takes place in the assigned area. Security Officers must maintain a professional image and always demonstrate excellent customer service.
Basic Functions:
  • Control of entrances and movement of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
  • Patrol of buildings and perimeters.
  • Escort of material and personnel.
  • Inspection of security and fire exposures.
  • Special assignments.
Responsibilities:
Duties may vary depending on department size, organizational structure, geographic location and post assignments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to allow for certain ADA requirements. Overall general function of officers is to provide security detail as described below (Note: duties may vary depending on post orders):
  • Be on time and report to post in full uniform.
  • Maintain professional image that includes greeting customers, visitors and employees in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Be proactive in knowing all revisions to post orders and general information distributed by the customer and AFS.
  • Patrol physical property or maintain fixed post position, being diligent to report any suspicious activity and investigate accidents and criminal acts.
  • Monitor cameras or equipment in a continuous fashion as outlined in the post orders.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of all emergency policies, procedures and regulations to be able to respond to alarms, incidents and emergency situations.
  • Complete Daily Activity Reports, Log Book entries, Incident Reports and all relevant reports related to job assignment.
  • Make recommendations to management on better safety and loss prevention processes as identified during daily routine.
  • Have knowledge of any life safety systems, fire panels, CCTV system computer, and other such equipment to complete job assignments. Ensure continuous and safe operation of all elevators and access doors. Know authorized contractor personnel who are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
  • Ensure training and compliance guidelines are met as outlined by AFS and other agencies regulating the customer / market.
  • Communicate on a daily basis with Security Supervisor any new Security Issues or changes that need to be considered or implemented.

Availability Expectations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide a visible and proactive security presence to deter theft, vandalism, and disorderly behavior.
  • Conduct frequent patrols of interior and exterior areas, including parking lots, entrances, and common areas.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to incidents including disturbances, shoplifting, medical emergencies, and safety hazards.
  • Enforce property rules, tenant policies, and applicable Illinois laws in a professional and consistent manner.
  • Assist in the removal of trespassers or disruptive individuals in accordance with policy and training.
  • Complete accurate and detailed incident reports and daily activity logs.
  • Provide customer service assistance while maintaining a strong security presence.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency responders as needed.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues, fire hazards, or safety concerns.

Physical Demands (Critical Requirement)
  • Extensive standing and walking are required for the majority of each shift.
  • Continuous foot patrols throughout large retail areas both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods with minimal sitting opportunities.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and move rapidly across the property.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25-30 pounds.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of all incidents and sensitive information.
  • Assist with lost and found procedures.
  • Follow all company policies and Illinois use-of-force guidelines.
  • Participate in required training, including de-escalation and emergency response techniques.
  • Adapt quickly to different posts and assignments with minimal notice.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Illinois PERC Card required.
  • Previous security or retail experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, observation, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
  • Valid Driver's license required.
  • Must successfully complete a background check prior to employment.
