Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Ranch Security Manager will be responsible for security and caretaking of Black Rock Station and Dog Ranch over a one month period when all other resident ranch staff have moved off site during the Burning Man event. This position will require them to live on-site at Black Rock Station for the duration of their employment. They will also monitor any staff, visitors and the general public who access or request access to the ranch.  

This is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV running from August to September, 2026.

The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on July 6th 2026.


 

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


 

Caretaking and Security (95%)

  • Live on site at Black Rock Station (BRS) while regular ranch crew are living and working on playa.
  • Monitor all visitors at BRS.
  • Check in on onsite outside vendors .
  • Communicate and coordinate with the Ranch Operations Manager any visits by staff or outside vendors.
  • Provide assistance and direction to any visitors.
  • Be willing to escalate any situation involving non authorized visitors or trespassers to the Ranch Operations Manage, BRC Rangers, or Law enforcement.
  • Monitor the general state of the BRS yard and buildings, reporting new damage to the Ranch Operations Manager.
  • Attend to the front gate at BRS as instructed, opening, closing or locking as needed throughout the day.
  • Monitor any unusual traffic on Jackson Lane.
  • Drive through Dog Ranch daily.
  • Feed, water and monitor any livestock at Dog Ranch and BRS.
  • Water trees, shrubs or gardens as directed.
  • Help loading and unloading materials or tools.
  • Pick up loose or windblown debris around BRS, Dog Ranch and Jackson Lane .
  • Drive personnel or materials to or from Gerlach if requested.


 

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.


QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • Communicates clearly and concisely verbally and through written correspondence. Tailors communication to the receiving party with appropriate professionalism. Experienced and comfortable using two-way radios.
  • Honest and ethical with a dedication to the Burning Man principles and behavioral standards.
  • Reliable; fulfills obligations.
  • Open to change and considerable variety in daily tasks.
  • Able to accept feedback and act calmly.
  • Instills and applies order and cleanliness to the work environment and pays careful attention to detail in handling important information.
  • Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 pounds) safely; willing to get dirty.

  • A team player; willing to work as part of a group to coordinate workflow 
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.

  • Capable of working in an extreme environment, including drastic temperature changes, high winds, and low visibility.
  • Able to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada. 
     

PREFERRED

  • Experience working with livestock and farm animals
  • Heavy equipment operator work experience.
  • Skilled in operating power tools.
  • Handyman, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical skills.
  • Knowledge of First-Aid.
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

COMPENSATION: 

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $_1000_ to $_1200_ per week.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. It is physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health and endurance.
