What is a flex PCB?

A Flex PCB, or flexible printed circuit board, is a type of electronic circuit board designed to be flexible rather than rigid, allowing it to bend and fit into compact or irregularly shaped spaces. These boards are made from flexible plastic substrates such as polyimide, which can withstand high temperatures and mechanical stress. Flex PCBs are commonly used in applications like smartphones, medical devices, and wearable electronics due to their space-saving and lightweight properties. They can improve reliability by reducing the need for connectors and cables, and they enable innovative designs in modern electronics.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working with flex PCB design and manufacturing?

Engineers working with Flex PCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) design often encounter challenges related to material selection, mechanical stress, and maintaining signal integrity. Unlike rigid boards, Flex PCBs must withstand repeated bending and flexing, which requires careful layout and choice of materials to prevent cracks or failures. Additionally, close collaboration with manufacturers is essential to ensure the design meets both electrical and mechanical requirements. Attention to detail in the early design phase helps minimize costly revisions during prototyping and production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flex PCB engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flex PCB Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, PCB design principles, and materials science, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software such as Altium Designer or Mentor Graphics, and knowledge of IPC standards for flexible circuits are usually required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help in troubleshooting and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for designing reliable, manufacturable flexible circuits that meet industry standards and client specifications.

What is the difference between Flex Pcb vs Flex Circuit Designer?

AspectFlex PcbFlex Circuit Designer
CredentialsTechnical certifications, engineering backgroundDesign software proficiency, engineering degree often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities, assembly linesDesign studios, engineering offices
Industry UsageManufacturing, electronics assemblyProduct development, electronic design firms

Flex Pcb refers to the physical flexible printed circuit boards used in electronic devices, while a Flex Circuit Designer is a professional who designs these flexible circuits. The designer creates layouts and schematics, whereas the Flex Pcb is the manufactured product. Both roles require technical knowledge of electronics and design software, but one focuses on creation and planning, and the other on manufacturing and assembly.

About TTM
TTM Technologies, Inc. is a leading global manufacturer of technology products, including mission systems, radio frequency ("RF") components, RF microwave/microelectronic assemblies, and technologically advanced printed circuit boards ("PCB"s). TTM stands for time-to-market, representing how TTM's time-critical, one-stop design, engineering and manufacturing services enable customers to reduce the time required to develop new products and bring them to market.
Additional information can be found at www.ttm.com
Position Summary:
TTM is an advanced-technology leader in highly sophisticated surveillance, communications, analysis and integration solutions. Our systems are deployed across a wide range of land, sea and air applications, providing our aerospace, defense and commercial customers with a distinct tactical advantage.
In this role, the PCB Staff Design Engineer will design moderate to complex printed circuit board (PCB) layouts in the domain of Digital, Analog, Power & RF interconnect applications. This includes responsibility for circuit board layout conceptualization, (CAD application by means of Siemens Xpedition, PAD's or Cadence Allegro tool sets), detail design activities and value-engineering in support of internal TTM programs.
Areas of emphasis/focus include physical design (CAD implementation)/documentation utilizing best practice of electrical IPC standards/methodologies with experienced approach to manufacturing and sustaining maintenance of legacy design projects. Complementary support provided by a combination of TTM Management, Field Application Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering and NPI Manufacturing teams.
Must have a background that would permit the U.S. Department of Defense to issue a Secret clearance when necessary for work on a project that requires such a clearance
Duties and Responsibilities:
Design Engineering Physical Design
• PCB concept sketches for assistance in design layout estimating
• PCB design suggestions/trade-offs regarding initial engineering inputs
• Support changes to existing schematic diagrams using
TTM suite of tools: OrCAD and/or DxDesigner
  • Place and route components ensuring that all electrical and physical specifications meet the detailed design requirements for each PCB design. Utilization of Siemens Xpedition/PAD's and/or Cadence Allegro required
  • Participate in design reviews, interface with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and process engineers to design proto-type and production printed circuit boards in accordance with TTM standards and quality procedures
