Flex Internship information

What is a flex internship?

A Flex Internship is a type of internship that offers flexible work arrangements, such as remote work, adjustable hours, or project-based assignments, instead of a traditional 9-to-5, in-office schedule. These internships are designed to accommodate students' or interns' academic schedules, personal commitments, or geographical constraints. Flex Internships can be found in various industries and often emphasize results and deliverables over time spent in a physical workspace. This flexibility can make internships more accessible and inclusive, helping participants gain valuable work experience without sacrificing other priorities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flex intern?

To thrive as a Flex Intern, you generally need strong organizational skills, adaptability, and a willingness to learn, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant academic program. Familiarity with productivity tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, as well as collaboration platforms such as Slack or Trello, is typically expected. Proactive communication, teamwork, and time management are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to effectively contribute to dynamic teams, handle varied assignments, and maximize their learning experience.

How does a flex internship typically structure mentorship and feedback for interns?

In a Flex Internship, mentorship is often structured through regular check-ins with a designated supervisor or mentor who guides your progress and helps you set achievable goals. Feedback is usually provided both formally, through scheduled performance reviews, and informally, via ongoing communication throughout your assignments. This flexible setup allows you to develop professional skills in a supportive environment while collaborating with team members across different departments. As a result, interns gain valuable networking opportunities and practical experience tailored to their interests and schedules.

What is the difference between Flex Internship vs Part-Time Internship?

Flex Internships offer adaptable schedules and remote options, ideal for students balancing other commitments. Part-Time Internships follow a set schedule, providing structured work hours. Both roles serve early professionals and students, but Flex Internships emphasize flexibility and remote work, while Part-Time Internships focus on fixed hours and on-site presence.

About the Role:
As an Accounting Policy Intern, you'll be an integral part of a collaborative, agile team. The Intern position reports to the Accounting Policy Director and can be performed remotely or in a hybrid capacity from our Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas offices.
We built this internship to work around your semester. Start at 10-20 hours/week, flex up during breaks or summer if you want more, and stay on with us across multiple semesters.
You'll get hands-on experience with how our team uses AI in technical accounting, helping build and improve the tools and workflows we rely on and shaping how the function works day to day.
What is Accounting Policy? Accounting Policy is the team that determines the right accounting treatment for Security Benefit's most complex, new, or unusual transactions, and how new accounting standards apply to the company. It interprets FASB and NAIC guidance, sets the company's position on emerging issues, and helps partner teams apply that guidance consistently. It's the "how do we account for this, and why" function.
  • Use AI tools and agents to help build and organize a technical accounting knowledge repository, capturing research, precedent, and accounting positions in a structured, searchable format
  • Gain exposure to emerging U.S. GAAP and Statutory accounting guidance (FASB, NAIC) by supporting research on real transactions
  • Assist with maintaining and enhancing regulatory tracking tools and summaries for internal stakeholders
  • Provide support on PBBD (Principles-Based Bond Definition) initiatives, including documentation of decision frameworks and onboarding considerations
  • Assist in drafting summaries and supporting materials for accounting policy memos and internal presentations
  • Help document and streamline Accounting Policy processes and procedures, including how the team uses AI tools day to day
  • Participate in cross-functional discussions (as appropriate) to gain exposure to investment accounting, financial reporting, and actuarial impacts

What We're Looking For:
Students eligible for the internship will be current, full-time students available to begin immediately.
  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in accounting, finance, or a related field, with a genuine interest in technical accounting (no prior technical accounting coursework or work experience required).
  • Curiosity about AI tools and agents (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) and interest in applying them to real business and research problems
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • A willingness to learn and develop industry-related knowledge.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in written form.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently with guidance.
  • Comfortable learning new software quickly; proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel is a plus.
  • Willingness to work and learn in multiple financial systems.
  • A team player with a collaborative mindset.

This isn't a summer-only program; it's a pipeline into our Accounting Policy function. Because the role runs across multiple semesters, you can grow with the team, take on more over time, and help build the foundation for a career in technical accounting.
