What is a fixed ops director?

A Fixed Ops Director oversees the fixed operations departments of an automotive dealership, which typically include service, parts, and sometimes the body shop. Their main responsibilities are to ensure these departments run efficiently, maintain customer satisfaction, and drive profitability. They manage staff, set goals, monitor financial performance, and implement processes that improve productivity and service quality. The Fixed Ops Director plays a crucial role in the overall success of a dealership by optimizing non-sales operations and ensuring a seamless customer experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fixed ops director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fixed Ops Director, you need extensive knowledge of dealership service, parts, and body shop operations, often supported by automotive management experience or relevant certifications. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), inventory management software, and manufacturer warranty processes is crucial. Leadership, customer service orientation, and analytical thinking are standout soft skills for driving team performance and customer satisfaction. These skills and qualities ensure efficient operations, profitability, and a positive reputation for the dealership’s fixed operations department.

What is the difference between Fixed Ops Director vs Service Manager?

AspectFixed Ops DirectorService Manager

Required CredentialsExperience in automotive service management, often with certifications like ASEExperience in service department, ASE certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentExecutive level, strategic planning, cross-department coordinationOperational focus, direct interaction with technicians and customers

The Fixed Ops Director typically holds a higher-level, strategic role overseeing multiple departments, while the Service Manager focuses on daily service operations. Both roles require automotive service experience and certifications, but the Fixed Ops Director operates at a broader, more strategic level within the dealership.

How does a fixed ops director typically collaborate with service and parts department teams to improve operational efficiency?

A Fixed Ops Director works closely with both the service and parts departments, overseeing daily operations and implementing strategies to streamline workflows. This often involves coordinating regular meetings, setting performance metrics, and fostering open communication to address challenges quickly. By aligning goals across departments and ensuring everyone follows standardized processes, the Fixed Ops Director helps improve customer satisfaction, reduce wait times, and increase profitability. Collaboration also includes training staff and introducing new technologies to enhance service delivery.
