Job description

Vessel Tankerman are responsible for conducting safe cargo transfers including but not limited to safe loading and unloading of liquid tank barges for contract customers. Incumbents in this position must possess and maintain USCG licensing. In addition, vessel tankerman perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance.


Vessel Tankerman perform tasks in all weather conditions both outside and in the confines of the vessel while navigating the western rivers. Work is performed on rotating shifts, 6 hours on/6 hours off.

Essential Vessel Tankerman Duties:

  • Follow all CTC Safety policies and procedures as well as government regulatory requirements for loading/unloading or transport.
  • Follow pre-transfer inspection requirements; execute pre-transfer conference and the Declaration of Inspection.
  • Must be able to complete the Declaration of Inspection and other required documents per all applicable USCG regulations.
  • Participation in the annual Benzene Monitoring Program.
  • Connect cargo hoses or loading arms; Initiate pumping; increase pressure appropriately to normal discharge pressure. Must be willing and able to perform barge inspections, audits and repairs when not conducting a transfer.
  • Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies.
  • Perform calculation of loading rate; monitor all loadings to ensure safe and environmentally proper procedure is followed; secure cargo systems.
  • Perform minor repairs to barge equipment.
  • Build and break tow.
  • Inspect, correct, or notify others of any conditions which affect the safety of people or cargo.
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and landing work.
  • Examine cables, wires, and lines to ensure they are fit for use. Use tools to tighten or loosen the same as needed.
  • Effectively handle cables, wires, and lines to secure barges in a safe and environmentally appropriate fashion.
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance including, but not limited to painting, cleaning, and basic engine room maintenance.
  • Communicate clearly on a VHF radio, understand and implement instructions provided by the vessel Captain.
  • Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies
  • Must possess or have the ability to possess a Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Other duties as needed.

Minimum Educational and Job Qualifications:

  • Must possess valid, current MMD endorsed as Tankerman-PIC (Barge) Dangerous Liquids through USCG.
  • Must have a minimum of 1-year experience as a Tankerman.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, and maintain a safe driving record.

Preferred Educational and Job Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Physical Capabilities:

Must be able to perform the following:

  • Traverse boats, barges, and tows a minimum of two (2) miles per day.
  • Transport equipment of 60 to 100 pounds up to 1000 feet.
  • Ascend/Descend a 90-degree ladder up to 40 feet.
  • Move, transport, and position equipment up to 60 pounds, independently.
  • Position self to move through 18-inch diameter hatch, and ability to enter Confined Spaces.
  • Must be respirator fit at all times and cleared for fit testing annually.
  • Constantly work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Maintain constant communication with crew members.
  • Work shift a min. of 12 hrs. (could be up to 15.)
  • Must be respirator fit at all times and cleared for fit testing annually.
  • Successful completion of Benzene clearance pre-employment with continued participation in the annual Benzene Monitoring Program
