First Robotics Intern information

What are First Robotics Interns?

First Robotics Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in the planning, building, and programming of robots for FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competitions. They work closely with mentors and teams to learn engineering, coding, and project management skills while contributing to the team's success. This internship provides hands-on experience in STEM fields, fosters teamwork, and encourages creative problem-solving. Interns may also help organize events or outreach programs to promote STEM education within their communities.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a First Robotics Intern expect to be involved with during their internship?

As a First Robotics Intern, you can expect to work on hands-on projects that may include designing, building, and testing robot components, programming control systems, and assisting with troubleshooting during competitions or demonstrations. Interns often collaborate closely with mentors, students, and engineering professionals to brainstorm solutions and contribute to team strategy. The environment is highly team-oriented and fast-paced, providing opportunities to develop both technical and soft skills. Interns may also help organize outreach activities or workshops, gaining experience in communication and project management while supporting the mission of inspiring interest in STEM fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a First Robotics Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a First Robotics Intern, you need a solid understanding of STEM fundamentals, especially in engineering, programming, and robotics, often supported by coursework or hands-on experience in related fields. Familiarity with tools like CAD software, programming languages (such as Java or Python), and robotics kits (e.g., FIRST Robotics Competition control systems) is typically required. Strong teamwork, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate and innovate within diverse teams. These skills and qualities are essential for successfully designing, building, and programming robots while contributing positively to team projects and competitions.

Job description

Fulfil is a well-funded, rapidly growing, and inclusive company that has developed a custom automation robotics system to pick and pack online orders of groceries and other consumables, bringing delight and a value proposition to consumers that doesn't exist today. Additionally, its unique design and technology is purpose-built to solve today's environmental problems in the world's food supply chain. Founded by a team with previous startup success and backed by top-tier VCs, we are committed to reducing waste, improving environmental impact, and reducing emissions with truly new technology. Our first commercial product launch with the technology was in summer 2022.ย

We can't do it alone -- we're seeking curious, capable, passionate team members motivated by the opportunity to create lasting impact on the world through their work. This role offers ample growth opportunities while working side-by-side with an impassioned, multi-disciplinary team spanning mechanical design, software, computer vision, systems integration, and operations to design and operationalize world-changing technology.

Fulfil is committed to creating an inclusive culture, and we celebrate diversity of all kinds. If this sounds like the kind of environment that you find intriguing, then please apply even if you don't feel you meet all the requirements listed below. We'd love to hear from you.

Job Description

Fulfil is hiring an Electrical Engineer Intern to join us at a fast-paced startup in a multi-disciplinary engineering team. As an Electrical Engineer Intern, you will develop printed circuit boards (PCBs), power distribution and control cabinets, safety systems, and associated cable interconnects. You'll participate in architectural design and the development of best practice guidelines. This role offers ample growth opportunities while working side-by-side with a motivated team to bring our innovative and exciting new technology to reality.

ย Your Responsibilities:

  • Own challenging electrical design projects in industrial automation and robotics
  • Design and build industrial control cabinets, cables, and harnesses
  • Document design concepts, trade studies, test procedures, and applicable assembly instructions
  • Select electrical components, including commercial cables, power supplies, PLCs, sensors, etc
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechatronics, systems, software, firmware, and operations teams) to design robust electrical systems
  • Test new designs on the bench and in-system to ensure function and performance

What We're Looking For:

  • Pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Hands-on aptitude - able to dive-in and troubleshoot a variety of system issues across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Experience with typical lab equipment and tools (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, soldering equipment)
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Passionate about electrical engineering and making great designs

What We'd Love To See:

  • Experience designing robotic equipment, motor control
  • Experience with Altium Designer
  • Familiar with UL, ISO, and IEC standards
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Not afraid of robots

What You Get:

  • A chance to be an early member of a fast-growth startup
