Job Summary:

The Outdoor Studies program at RRCC is seeking an instructor to teach a range of classes in Outdoor Education each semester. Courses range from in-person expedition style classes to fully remote/online classes. Instructors provide instructional duties for the College in their respective areas of expertise.
The instructor creates an engaging, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that reflects RRCC's commitment to Inclusive Excellence and promotes the success of a diverse student population. Responsibilities include preparing course materials and syllabi, providing timely feedback and communication, monitoring attendance and academic progress, maintaining compliance with college grading and recordkeeping requirements, and participating in department meetings, assessment activities, and other instructional initiatives.

This position reports to the Faculty Department Chair, Fire & Outdoor Studies and do not have any supervisory duties. This position may teach day, evening, weekend, and online courses with a flexible schedule based on departmental needs and may work up to 28 hours per week. Finalists must establish Colorado as their primary workplace, including online instruction, in accordance with CCCS employment requirements. This posting will be used to fill multiple vacancies.
Compensation is based on credit hour/contact hour ratios and ranges from $1213.06 to $1881.40 per credit hour.

Competencies/KSAs:

• Knowledge of local Colorado resources, and experience managing local, state, and federal Special Use Permits.
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach using an equity-minded framework and learner-centered teaching philosophy.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom where appropriate.
• A strong commitment to effective teaching at the community college and an understanding of its mission, philosophy and role in higher education.

Required Qualifications:

• Associates degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation, Environmental Education, or a closely related field with 2,000 hours of related experience in the field OR an associate’s degree and 4,000 hours of related experience in the field
• At least three (3) years of work experience in the outdoor recreation industry. Familiarity with managing outdoor education field trips and experience leading the specific course type you will teach. Ability to maintain safety while working in the back country with groups of up to twelve (12) students.

Physical & Cognitive Demands
The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.
• Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
• This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
• The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
• Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation, Environmental Education, or a closed related field.

Demonstrated expertise in outdoor education or in park ranger industries. Experience teaching in alternative formats/non-traditional programs. One year of successful full-time teaching experience at the college level or equivalent. Involvement with professional organizations such as the AORE, NIRSA, AMGA, ACA, AEE, WEA, and instructor training courses or certifications related to the following areas: rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, map and compass, mountaineering, ice climbing, skiing, snowboarding, winter/summer back country travel, mountain biking, outdoor leadership and group development, avalanche safety. Ability to repair, organize, and manage outdoor equipment.

Advertised Hourly Pay
The hourly pay for this position is $1213.06 to $1881.40 per credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt position and may work up to 28 hours per week, depending on budget and need.
This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.

Benefits
Medical insurance is offered to instructors and other variable hour employees who have worked, on average, at least 30 hours per week in a 12-month period. RRCC/CCCS uses an initial 12-month measurement period to determine medical benefit eligibility, and a 12-month standard measurement period. Student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours a week when classes are in session, and may work up to 28 hours a week, during academic breaks or breaks between terms at the discretion of the college, and non-classified hourly and temporary staff are limited to 28 hours in a workweek, depending on budget and need. Sick leave is granted in accordance with SB20-205, Sick Leave for Employees, accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.
Instructors and non-student hourly are required to contribute to Colorado PERA at a fixed percentage of their salary and do not contribute to Social Security. RRCC/CCCS student employees are not eligible to participate in PERA. RRCC/CCCS offers three tax-deferred investment plans, including 401(k), 403(b) and 457.
