First Mile information

What is a first mile?

A First Mile job typically involves the initial stage of a supply chain, focusing on the transportation and handling of goods from suppliers or warehouses to distribution centers. Employees in these roles may be responsible for loading, unloading, sorting, and ensuring shipments are prepared for the next stage of delivery. These jobs are crucial for maintaining efficiency and accuracy in logistics operations.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in a first mile role?

A First Mile professional is primarily responsible for receiving, sorting, and preparing goods for shipment as they enter the supply chain. Daily tasks often include coordinating with vendors or suppliers, verifying inventory accuracy, and using logistics software to track shipments. The role may also involve resolving discrepancies, ensuring documentation is complete, and collaborating with warehouse and transportation teams to meet tight deadlines. Working in this capacity requires adaptability and teamwork, as priorities can shift quickly based on shipment schedules. This position provides great exposure to core supply chain functions, paving the way for advancement into supervisory or specialized logistics roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the first mile position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a First Mile role, you need a strong understanding of supply chain logistics, inventory management, and warehouse operations, often supported by relevant experience or education in logistics or business. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and shipment tracking software is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are vital for success in this position. These competencies are crucial for ensuring efficient, accurate, and timely processing of goods at the initial stage of the supply chain.
