Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths. Supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment and does related work as required. The 1st Assistant Golf Course Superintendent oversees 2nd and 3rd Assistant Superintendents and may serve in the Golf Course Superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform proper maintenance and management procedures for greens, tees, fairways, lakes, roughs, traps and all other appropriate areas.
  2. Schedules work and supervises the employees in the use of equipment.
  3. Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowers and other equipment.
  4. Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment. Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  5. Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety training, personnel discipline and may modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
  6. Oversees the completion of work assignments by crew members and assists in the field decisions regarding job procedures, work standards and machinery use.
  7. Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  8. Enforces safe working conditions on all job assignments and is responsible for instructing staff on proper equipment use and work methods.
  9. Reports golf course conditions to the Golf Course Superintendent.
  10. Stays current with new ideas, equipment, fertilizers, chemicals, etc., through publications, meeting and educational seminars.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensures that all members, guests and co-workers are treated in a friendly and respectful manner in accordance with the standards of excellence of The Field and River Club.
  2. Assists in other departments and performs additional related duties as required.
  3. Understands and follows policies and procedures of the department and The Field and River Club and provides guidance in these areas to subordinates.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFIATIONS:

  1. Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervising personnel, co-workers, subordinates, business professionals, guests, members and the general public.
  3. Ability to project a positive, professional image to guests, members and the general public.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to handle a broad spectrum of facility project simultaneously.
  5. Requires a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling. Lifts 50 pounds occasionally up to 75 pounds. Ability to operate light and heavy machinery. Vision must be correctable to read and write. Hearing must be sufficient to understand conversation on the telephone in a noisy environment. Must have hand usage to complete forms, use keyboard and mouse and other office equipment. Many irregular hours.
