Job description

At Houston Methodist, the Stationary Engineer 1st Grade position is responsible for operation, maintenance and repair of all fixed building equipment including the Central Utility Plant (CUP) within the hospital campus. This includes setting operational parameters, monitoring and adjusting equipment as needed to maintain code compliance, safety and comfort of patients, staff and visitors while maintaining a focus on energy management.

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)

EXPERIENCE
  • Five years experience as a Stationary Engineer

  • SE-1 - 1st Grade Stationary Engineer - City License - City of Houston_PSV City of Houston

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles

  • Extensive knowledge of all levels of boiler systems and/or equipment, as indicated by the 1st grade licensing
  • Ability to operate in a large facility environment and function as a resource for staff on various and complex boiler-related equipment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a team-focused work unit that actively helps one another achieve department goals.
  • Provides guidance and training to other maintenance personnel on proper operations, maintenance and repair of the various operating systems, fixed building and CUP equipment within the hospital.
  • Assists other maintenance staff, as needed, to meet the needs of the department.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operates, maintains and repairs hospital building equipment and CUP to ensure that current hospital codes and operational standards are met while maintaining the comfort and safety of patients, visitors and staff.
  • Provides detailed information to relief operators at shift change, including, but not limited to, planned maintenance activity status, equipment status and any equipment operating outside normal parameters.
  • Coordinates repairs and preventive maintenance with various equipment service providers to meet the needs of the hospital.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts periodic readings of assigned equipment, entering pertinent information to comply with hospital and code requirements. Appropriately responds to unusual readings, alarms and activities of the equipment and informs leadership of actions taken.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and equipment repairs utilizing hospital procedures, manufacturer equipment manuals and proper tools and techniques.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operates various equipment and building systems to meet operational and code requirements with a focus on minimizing energy consumption.
  • Uses resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists leadership with the selection of new and replacement building systems and equipment to meet the needs of the hospital that is reliable and minimizes energy usage.
  • Performs high-level trainings as a subject matter expert (SME) for department and actively participates in department projects. Assumes responsibility for growth and development by participating in in-services programs and continuing education.
