Job Description:

Supports the surgeon and/or qualified first assistant during procedures by performing tasks such as sponging, suctioning, cutting sutures, holding retractors, and manipulating the endoscopic camera. Monitors conditions in the operating room, assesses needs of the patient and surgical team, and obtains additional instruments, supplies, and equipment as necessary. Supervises other healthcare team members in the surgical environment, providing orientation, training, and education to new personnel. Promotes a safe environment, takes appropriate action in emergency situations, and ensures adherence to regulatory standards and policies. Other duties as assigned. Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures, ensuring all items are functional and readily available. Maintains strict aseptic technique, performs surgical hand scrub, dons gown and gloves, and sets up sterile field and drapes for procedures. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization, performing point-of-use cleaning throughout procedures. Assists with room turnover by cleaning and prepping the operating room, directing ancillary personnel as needed. Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator per policy to ensure accuracy and safety. Participates in surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure, addressing any discrepancies or concerns. Prepares and passes off specimens appropriately, ensuring proper handling and documentation. Anticipates needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies, medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions during procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking, and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements.
  • Basic skills related to aseptic/sterile technique and knowledge of surgical instrumentation.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies, and commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and local, state, and national laws.
  • Ability to understand and process dictated instructions and directions.
  • Proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to function at a high level in a physically demanding, high-stress environment and work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work well with multiple team members and demonstrate clear communication, strong anticipatory skills, and concentration to detail.
  • Knowledge of assembly of mechanical devices and fundamental human anatomy.
  • Familiarity with practices such as Malignant Hyperthermia, Surgical Site Infection Prevention, Emergency Code Cart, high- and low-level disinfection, Clinical Alarms, Medication Management, Isolation Precautions, Fire Safety, AIDET, and SBAR.
  • Basic Life Support - CPR Cert (BLS).
  • Ability to work irregular hours including call hours.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
