What is a First Amendment lawyer?

First Amendment lawyers are legal professionals who specialize in issues related to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, which protects freedoms such as speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. They represent clients in cases involving free speech rights, freedom of religion, and censorship, often defending individuals, journalists, organizations, or media outlets. These lawyers may work in private practice, for nonprofit organizations, or as part of advocacy groups, and they play a crucial role in upholding constitutional liberties.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a First Amendment lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a First Amendment lawyer, you need expertise in constitutional law, strong research and writing abilities, and a Juris Doctor degree with bar admission. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and experience with court filing systems are typically required. Excellent oral advocacy, analytical thinking, and negotiation skills help set top performers apart in this field. These qualifications are essential for effectively defending clients’ rights and navigating the complex legal landscape of free speech and related issues.

What are some common challenges faced by First Amendment lawyers when handling cases involving freedom of speech?

First Amendment lawyers often navigate complex legal and ethical challenges, particularly when balancing the right to free speech with other societal interests such as public safety, national security, or the prevention of hate speech. They must stay current with evolving jurisprudence, as court decisions frequently refine the boundaries of protected speech. Additionally, these attorneys regularly collaborate with clients, courts, and sometimes advocacy organizations to build persuasive arguments while managing intense public scrutiny. The work can involve both litigation and advisory roles, requiring strong research, writing, and communication skills.

What is the difference between First Amendment vs Paralegal?

Job description

About Concert Golf Partners:
Concert Golf Partners (CGP) is a Bain Capital-backed private club operator with 40 clubs across 19 states and an aggressive growth target of 100+ clubs within three to five years. A recent IT Director departure has created an immediate opening for a senior applications leader. This role is the management layer for all club-facing application work — ERP implementations, upgrades, integrations, training, and business process improvement — and is the primary point of accountability for technology delivery at the club level. Hybrid friendly role.
CGP onboards 6–10 new club acquisitions per year, each requiring a full ERP implementation, staff training, and systems integration. The portfolio runs on the Northstar club management ERP across 40 properties. The Director of Applications & Technology ensures that every acquisition goes live cleanly, every integration delivers on its business case, and every club staff member is trained and proficient on the tools they use every day. This role reports to VP of Information Technology.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the applications team: Senior ERP Resource, Application Trainer, and Business Process Analyst.
  • Own the full applications portfolio roadmap: ERP platform lifecycle, integration priorities, training standards, and process automation across all 40+ clubs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Northstar ERP vendor on all platform matters; escalate commercial and contractual decisions to the VP of IT.
  • Govern all application vendor relationships: ERP platform, CRM integration partner, timekeeping vendor, Golf Genius, digital signage, and other club applications.
  • Own the acquisition application onboarding process end-to-end: ensure each new club is fully configured, integrated, and trained before go-live.
  •  Partner with the Data & Integrations lead on integration architecture: applications team defines business requirements; data team owns the data layer design.
  • Partner with the VP of IT on the Northstar First Amendment scope sign-off decision and delivery oversight.
  • Build and maintain the Acquisition IT Playbook; capture and institutionalize learnings after each onboarding cycle.

Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of experience in application management, ERP implementation, or IT delivery leadership
  • Experience managing ERP implementations in a multi-property or multi-unit environment (hospitality, real estate, or similar).
  • Strong track record of managing small, high-output teams and developing talent.
  • Vendor management experience — ability to hold ERP and application vendors accountable to contractual commitments.
  • Northstar ERP experience strongly preferred; Jonas, Club Essential, or similar club management ERP experience considered.
  • Excellent communication skills — this role presents at steering committee level and interfaces with club GMs and operations leadership.
  • PE-backed or high-growth environment experience a plus.
