What is a firmware QA engineer?

Firmware QA Engineers are professionals responsible for testing and validating the software that controls hardware devices, known as firmware. They develop test plans, execute tests, and identify bugs to ensure firmware reliability and performance. Their work helps ensure that devices like smartphones, routers, or embedded systems function correctly before reaching customers. Firmware QA Engineers often work closely with developers and hardware engineers to resolve issues and improve product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware QA engineer?

To thrive as a Firmware QA Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, experience with embedded systems, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with scripting languages (such as Python), test automation frameworks, version control systems, and debugging tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality firmware products by catching defects early and improving overall system performance.

What are some common challenges faced by firmware QA engineers during the testing process?

Firmware QA Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited hardware resources for testing, complex integration issues between hardware and software, and difficulty in replicating hardware-specific bugs. Additionally, they must ensure thorough test coverage across multiple device versions and configurations, which requires strong collaboration with development and hardware teams. Staying up-to-date with evolving testing tools and methodologies also plays a key role in successfully navigating these challenges.

What is the difference between Firmware Qa Engineer vs Firmware Test Engineer?

AspectFirmware Qa EngineerFirmware Test Engineer
CertificationsRelevant QA certifications (e.g., ISTQB)Similar QA certifications, often overlapping
Work EnvironmentInvolved in quality assurance processes, documentation, and complianceFocuses on executing test cases, debugging, and reporting issues
Industry UsageCommonly used in hardware/software integrated industries like automotive, IoTUsed in embedded systems, consumer electronics, and similar fields

Firmware Qa Engineers focus on ensuring overall quality standards, process adherence, and documentation, while Firmware Test Engineers primarily execute tests, identify bugs, and verify firmware functionality. Both roles are essential in firmware development but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

Bevi is on a mission to transform how beverages are delivered and consumed. Our connected beverage platform eliminates the need for single-use bottles and cans, making it easy, fun, and sustainable to stay hydrated. As the category leader in IoT-enabled beverage technology, we're building a future where Bevi machines are everywhere people live, work, and connect. We've raised over $160M in venture capital, serve thousands of customers across the US, Canada, UK and Ireland, and we've been rapidly growing year over year, saving over 1 billion bottles from waste. In addition to driving hypergrowth with our current product line, Bevi is heavily investing in new product development.

Bevi is looking for a Software QA Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you'll own quality across our full stack, validating embedded firmware on physical machines and hardening our firmware release process. You'll work closely with our Firmware and Software teams to build test strategies that catch issues before they reach a customer. This role requires working from our Boston office 3+ days per week, since much of the job involves hands-on testing with physical machines and lab hardware. We're looking for someone who is curious, collaborative, and comfortable moving between hardware labs and cloud infrastructure.

Your Day to Day
  • Monitor and test firmware and low-level software development throughout the entire software development life cycle (SDLC), verifying that releases meet defined quality standards and customer agreements - influencing not just how it is tested, but how it's developed.
  • Design, implement, and maintain test strategies for embedded systems and connected-device workflows to assess release-readiness.
  • Validate firmware behavior on physical machines and test hardware, including sensors, dispensing mechanisms, and connectivity modules.
  • Test over-air (OTA) firmware update flows for reliability, rollback safety, and fleet-wide rollout.
  • Characterize firmware behavior under soak and stress testing to catch memory leaks, timing issues, and intermittent failures.
  • Work to prevent bugs from occurring during development, improving the overall development process rather than just catching issues after the fact.
  • Collaborate with firmware, software, and hardware engineers to identify and resolve identified defects.
  • Track and document test procedures and findings in a bug tracking system, and participate in design review meetings to report on results.
  • Contribute to release sign-off and help define quality gates for new machine, firmware, and software releases.
  • Explore and adopt AI-powered testing tools such as AI-assisted test generation, self-healing automation scripts, and anomaly detection to improve test coverage and efficiency.
  • Debug firmware issues at the source using debuggers, serial consoles, and logic analyzers to isolate whether failures originate in firmware, hardware, or integration layers.
  • Develop tests that exercise firmware over its communication interfaces (UART, I2C, USB, Wi-Fi), including fault injection and boundary conditions like power loss, sensor failure, and degraded connectivity.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 2+ years of relevant experience in QA or test engineering, ideally spanning both embedded/firmware and software systems.
  • This is a career-development role within the QA discipline: you'll take on assignments of increasing complexity under moderate supervision, with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Hands-on experience testing embedded systems (C/C++, RTOS environments, serial or wireless communication protocols).
  • Understanding of IoT or connected-device architectures, including cloud-to-device communication.
  • Experience with bug tracking and test management tools (ex, Jira).
  • Comfort working directly with physical hardware and lab equipment, not just simulators.
  • Understanding embedded C/C++ to review firmware changes, reason about failure modes, and write meaningful test cases against them.
  • Familiarity with hardware debugging and measurement tools (multimeters, logic analyzers, j-link debuggers, serial terminals).
  • Understanding of common embedded failure modes.
  • Scripting ability for building or maintaining test automation and CI/CD tooling is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work across firmware, software, and QA teams.
  • Able and willing to work onsite at our Boston office 2-3 days per week.
Additional Skills
  • Experience with hardware test rigs, oscilloscopes, or protocol analyzers.
  • Background in IoT, appliances, or other connected-hardware products.
  • Familiarity with pytest-based embedded test frameworks or firmware simulation/emulation.
  • Exposure to bootloaders, OTA/DFU update mechanisms, or firmware release processes.
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS) and infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Experience building custom test fixtures or HIL test rigs from scratch.
  • Experience working with JIRA and/or Confluence is a plus.
  • Experience with specific AI testing/code review tools.
