Firmware Manager information

What is a firmware manager?

A Firmware Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, testing, and deployment of embedded software and firmware within hardware products. They lead a team of engineers, ensure project timelines are met, and maintain firmware quality and security standards. Additionally, they collaborate with hardware and software teams to optimize performance and resolve issues. Their role is critical in industries like consumer electronics, automotive, and IoT, where firmware plays an essential role in device functionality.

What are some typical challenges a firmware manager faces, and how can they be addressed?

Firmware Managers often face challenges such as balancing project deadlines with quality requirements, coordinating cross-functional teams, and staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies. Managing dependencies between software, hardware, and product requirements can lead to complex troubleshooting and prioritization decisions. Proactive communication, effective resource planning, and fostering a culture of continuous learning can help address these challenges. Many organizations support their managers by offering training, collaborative tools, and opportunities to participate in strategic planning to keep projects on track and teams motivated.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Manager, you need a strong background in embedded systems, firmware development, and team leadership, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), real-time operating systems, and certification in project management (such as PMP or Agile methodologies) is often expected. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to mentor and coordinate diverse teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure successful delivery of complex firmware projects, seamless team collaboration, and high product quality in a fast-paced technology environment.

Operational Technology Manager

Autonomous Solutions/A S I

Job description

At ASI, we are revolutionizing industries with state-of-the-art autonomous robotics solutions. Within the fields of agriculture, construction, landscaping, and logistics, we deliver technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency. With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail, Autonomy and Growth guiding everything we do, we're shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets.
As the Operational Technology Manager at ASI, you own everything that keeps ASI's field and site systems running twenty-four hours a day, six days a week. You are responsible for Operational Data, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) infrastructure, the Operational Control Center (OCC), site infrastructure (servers, networks, communications, workstations), and the Operational Technology / Information Technology (OT/IT) security boundary that separates ASI's field networks from the corporate one.
This is a founding role for the Operational Technology Team at ASI Robots. The individual in this role will be tasked with building out this division at ASI. You will have direct access to the VP of IS, the mandate to shape how ASI's physical systems are operated and secured, and a team that is ready to be led. By Day 90 you will have the OCC operating model defined, automated alerting live, and runbook coverage at 100%. This is a role for someone who wants to build a business function, not inherit one.
Responsibilities
  • Own the OT infrastructure roadmap, network architecture, air-gap controls, and physical security systems.
  • Define and enforce version-controlled OT runbooks and disaster recovery plans.
  • Drive OT patch and firmware lifecycle management in coordination with vendor schedules.
  • Manage the budget and procurement of all site-related equipment and resources.
  • Own and evolve the OCC operating model - tooling, dashboards, alert configurations, and escalation procedures - and establish 24/6 OCC coverage.
  • Serve as incident commander for all Priority 0 (P0) OT events and lead post-incident reviews.
  • Build and maintain Level 1 (L1) automated alerting and auto-remediation so engineers focus on exceptions, not noise.
  • Own OT/IT boundary security policy jointly with the Security & Compliance team; monitor and enforce network segmentation and treat any boundary crossing as a high-severity event.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead OT/SCADA Systems Engineers and OCC Analysts as the team scales; hold the team to Service-Level Agreements (SLAs) for alert response, uptime, and runbook coverage.
  • Explore revenue opportunities from offering OT services and/or data solutions to customers.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years in operational technology, industrial controls, SCADA systems, or a combined OT/IT role.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating OT systems and control infrastructure.
  • Deep understanding of OT network architecture, air-gap controls, and OT/IT security boundary management.
  • Experience standing up or maturing an operations control center - tooling, alerting, runbooks, and SLAs.
  • Strong incident command instincts; has run Priority 0 (P0) events and led post-mortems.
  • Familiarity with OT patch management constraints and vendor firmware lifecycle realities.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner cross-functionally with Engineering, Facilities, Security, and Product teams.
  • Demonstrated success managing a mid-sized team of engineers.
  • Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills; able to brief technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred: experience in robotics, manufacturing, or industrial environments with physical safety implications; background in Building Management Systems (BMS); Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP), Certified SCADA Security Architect (CSSA), or equivalent Industrial Control Systems (ICS) security credentials.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment continuously.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through electronic means.
  • Ability to traverse office, lab, data center, and field environments as required.
