Firmware Manager information

What is a firmware manager?

A Firmware Manager is responsible for overseeing the development, testing, and deployment of embedded software and firmware within hardware products. They lead a team of engineers, ensure project timelines are met, and maintain firmware quality and security standards. Additionally, they collaborate with hardware and software teams to optimize performance and resolve issues. Their role is critical in industries like consumer electronics, automotive, and IoT, where firmware plays an essential role in device functionality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Manager, you need a strong background in embedded systems, firmware development, and team leadership, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), real-time operating systems, and certification in project management (such as PMP or Agile methodologies) is often expected. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to mentor and coordinate diverse teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure successful delivery of complex firmware projects, seamless team collaboration, and high product quality in a fast-paced technology environment.

What are some typical challenges a firmware manager faces, and how can they be addressed?

Firmware Managers often face challenges such as balancing project deadlines with quality requirements, coordinating cross-functional teams, and staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies. Managing dependencies between software, hardware, and product requirements can lead to complex troubleshooting and prioritization decisions. Proactive communication, effective resource planning, and fostering a culture of continuous learning can help address these challenges. Many organizations support their managers by offering training, collaborative tools, and opportunities to participate in strategic planning to keep projects on track and teams motivated.

Job description

Role Summaryย

We are looking for a Senior Firmware Managerย to lead and grow the embedded software team responsible for the control, safety, and communication firmware that powers our converters andย solid-stateย transformer platforms.ย

You will guide technical architecture, drive execution across multiple product lines, and build a team that consistently deliversย highreliabilityย embedded systems. This role isย handson: you will both manage engineers and contribute to design, code reviews, systemย bringup, andย debugging ofย real hardware.ย

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of firmware, power electronics, and product leadership.ย

Responsibilities:ย ย

Technical Leadershipย

  • Own the architecture, implementation, and quality of all firmware running on our converter and SST platforms.ย
  • Lead firmware design reviews, safety analyses, andย highlevelย technical decisionsย
  • Partner closely with Controls, Power Electronics, Electrical, and Systems teams to translate product and system requirements into clear firmware specificationsย
  • Guide firmware architecture across multiple MCUย platformsย
  • Establish best practices for embedded development-coding standards, CI/CD, testing frameworks, branching strategies, and documentationย

Execution & Deliveryย

  • Drive firmware delivery across multiple releases and hardware revisionsย
  • Manage prioritization, sprint planning, andย crossfunctionalย alignment with Hardware, Controls, Systems, and Manufacturing teamsย
  • Work directly with hardware during bring-up: oscilloscopes, UART/SPI/I2C debug, JTAG, power event testing, and system validationย
  • Ownย rootcauseย investigation forย firmwarerelatedย issues in lab, field, and manufacturing environmentsย

Team Leadership & Developmentย

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop aย highperformingย firmware engineering teamย
  • Create growth paths, set expectations, and provide regular feedbackย
  • Build a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical curiosityย
  • Foster strongย crossteamย communication and requirements traceabilityย

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years developing embedded firmware in C/C++ forย realtimeย systemsย
  • 3+ years managing or leading firmware teamsย
  • Strong experience withย realtimeย control systems,ย safetycriticalย firmware, or power electronicsย
  • Deep understanding of microcontroller architectures, interrupts, DMA, peripherals, bootloaders, and RTOS environmentsย
  • Handson experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, hardwareย bringup, and debugging at the board and system levelย
  • Experience with structured requirements (PRS/DRS), version control, CI/CD, and firmware release processesย
  • Strong communicationย skills and ability to collaborate across disciplinesย

Bonus Qualifications:ย

  • Familiarity with grid-connected systemsย
  • Knowledge of safety standards (UL/IEC), HV/MV systems, orย SILorientedย firmware developmentย
  • Exposure to manufacturing test firmwareย
  • Experience scaling firmware practices for multiproduct hardware organizationsย
