What is the difference between Firmware Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectFirmware EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of hardware and low-level programmingBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; strong programming skills in C/C++
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing firmware for hardware devices, often working closely with hardware teamsDeveloping software for embedded systems, often in real-time environments
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, IoT, automotiveConsumer electronics, medical devices, industrial automation

Firmware Engineers focus on creating low-level code that directly interacts with hardware components, while Embedded Software Engineers develop software that runs on embedded systems, often with a broader scope. Both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap in industries like consumer electronics and IoT.

How much money does a firmware engineer make?

A firmware engineer's salary varies by experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually in many regions. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills in embedded systems and real-time operating systems can earn higher salaries. Certifications and proficiency with tools like C and assembly language can also influence compensation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical or Computer Engineering. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help firmware engineers excel, especially when collaborating with hardware and software teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure reliable, efficient firmware that seamlessly integrates with hardware products.

What are some common challenges firmware engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Firmware Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and QA teams. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication of technical requirements and constraints, as firmware must interface seamlessly with hardware and higher-level software. Misalignment or delays in one area can impact overall delivery, so Firmware Engineers need strong problem-solving and collaboration skills to address integration issues and keep projects on track. Regular cross-team meetings and thorough documentation help mitigate these challenges.

What is a firmware engineer?

Firmware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that allows hardware devices to function. This firmware acts as a bridge between the device's hardware and higher-level software, ensuring that hardware components operate correctly and efficiently. Firmware Engineers typically work with embedded systems, writing code in languages like C or C++ for microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic devices. Their work is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and telecommunications.

What does a firmware engineer do?

A firmware engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software that controls hardware devices such as microcontrollers and embedded systems. They work with programming languages like C or C++, use tools like debuggers and oscilloscopes, and often collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper device functionality and performance.

Job description

About the Role:

Client is seeking a talented and motivated Product Design Engineer to join our team in Oklahoma City. This is a core engineering role that sits at the intersection of electrical design, musicality, and product development, you will own projects from initial concept through public release.

You will be the primary engineer working on and overseeing individual product development

efforts: designing and validating analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuitry; driving technical

decisions; following strategic project timelines; and collaborating closely with our product team to bring complete, polished products to market. This is an extremely hands-on position in a creative, fast-paced team environment where your fingerprints will be on the products that our customers love.

Responsibilities:

Electrical Design:

  • Analyze product and system requirements to develop ground-up analog, digital, and mixed-signal system architectures

  • Design electrical circuitry including schematic entry and PCB layout using Altium Designer

  • Assemble and test prototypes of new designs in the lab

  • Quickly identify design issues and develop practical, effective solutions throughout the development cycle

  • Work with compliance labs to ensure all design meet electromagnetic & safety standards

Project & Product Ownership:

  • Engage at the product level - contributing informed perspective on features, user experience, and design tradeoffs rather than simply executing a requirements list

  • Develop Product Requirement Documents for individual products, based on input from the product team, that will guide all aspects of development

  • Own the technical design side of individual product projects from kickoff to release, serving as the primary point of accountability for technical scope, design, and quality

  • Collaborate with our firmware and hardware engineers to ensure all design elements integrate effectively into a complete, shippable product

  • Work with in-house project manager to develop and follow project schedules and task breakdowns that keep efforts on track and deadlines met

  • Create and maintain technical documentation including BOMs, test procedures, build guides and other project-associated records

Production & Customer Support:

  • Support the production team by solving manufacturing problems and training build team on new builds

  • Support customer service by troubleshooting & resolving issues with defective products

Personal & Organizational Skills:

  • Highly organized; able to keep track of large amounts of deliverables and tasks related to multiple projects at a time, from the initial idea through to the final product - without

    having to be micro-managed

  • Able to see projects and work from multiple points of view to present work that's been self thoroughly scrutinized

  • Comfortable operating independently with a "see a need, fill a need" mindset -proactive rather than reactive

  • Flexible and positive under pressure; able to adapt quickly in a fluid, fast-moving environment while maintaining harmony with the team

  • Strong communicator who works well within a small, collaborative engineering team

  • Able to take direction and constructive feedback while also advocating for sound technical decisions to become a better contributor as the seasons pass

  • Deep understanding of and genuine passion for guitar effects and music

  • Operates with complete integrity with a team and alone

Requirements:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience

  • 3+ years of experience in audio hardware development including analog, digital control, DSP, and mixed-signal design

  • Proficient in schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer

  • Proficient in soldering and reworking by hand, both through hole and SMD components

  • Hands-on experience in an electronics lab with full understanding of standard test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes and signal generators

  • Working knowledge of Audio Precision test equipment and standard audio analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to build, test and troubleshoot PCB prototypes quickly and accurately

  • Demonstrated ability to assemble, test and troubleshoot products as whole including PCBs, mechanical components, chassis, cases, etc

  • Ability to set and meet realistic project timelines given a defined set of features and deliverables

  • Background in music is required - this is non-negotiable

Firmware development experience is a plus. You will work closely with our dedicated firmware engineer, and the ability to contribute at that level when needed is valued but not required.

Benefits:

  • United Healthcare Insurance plan available after 90-day probationary period

  • 4% Match 401K through John Hancock after one year of employment starting on the December and January participation windows

  • Holidays are paid by the company after a 90-day probationary period.
