What is a firmware engineer remote internship?

A Firmware Engineer Remote Internship is a temporary, often entry-level position where interns work remotely to assist in the development, testing, and debugging of firmware—low-level software that controls hardware devices. Interns typically learn to write code for embedded systems, collaborate with hardware and software teams, and gain hands-on experience with tools and technologies used in firmware engineering. The remote aspect allows interns to work from anywhere, making the opportunity accessible to a wider range of candidates. These internships are valuable for gaining practical skills and industry experience in embedded systems and firmware development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware engineer remote intern?

To excel as a Firmware Engineer Remote Intern, you typically need a solid understanding of embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a background in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with hardware debuggers, microcontroller development environments (such as Keil or MPLAB), and version control systems like Git is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills help set candidates apart. These competencies ensure you can efficiently contribute to firmware development, collaborate in distributed teams, and adapt to the fast-paced technology landscape.

What challenges might I face as a remote firmware engineer intern, and how can I effectively collaborate with the team?

As a remote Firmware Engineer intern, you may encounter challenges such as limited access to physical hardware for testing, time zone differences with team members, and less immediate feedback compared to in-person settings. To collaborate effectively, it's important to communicate proactively, participate actively in virtual meetings, and use version control and collaboration tools like Git and Slack. Many teams also set up remote access to hardware labs or provide simulation environments, so being resourceful and asking questions will help you overcome obstacles and stay engaged with your project and team.

Associate Wireless Software Engineer

Flock

Atlanta, GA • Remote

$100K - $150K/yr

Full-time

Posted 29 days ago

Job description

The Problem

As Flock scales our Drone as a First Responder solutions across complex outdoor environments, maintaining uninterrupted high-definition video streaming and low-latency telemetry data paths is essential to real-time operations. Expanding our connectivity architecture across non-line-of-sight terrestrial and aerial systems requires software engineers who can integrate physical radio hardware into embedded stacks. You will write software across Linux user space and driver layers, evaluate link statistics, and optimize wireless communication for our autonomous fleets.

What You'll Own
  • Integrate off-the-shelf and custom radio hardware into our drone connectivity architecture across Wi-Fi and cellular stacks.

  • Write, test, and maintain software routines across the Linux user space and driver layers using C, C++, and Python.

  • Develop automated routines to extract, log, and analyze wireless link performance metrics such as RSSI, SNR, and packet loss.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional RF, embedded systems, and cloud teams to design rate adaptation algorithms for dynamic flight environments.

  • Run flight data analyses and perform hardware-in-the-loop testing in connectivity labs to validate real-world aerial performance.

What This Role is Not
  • This isn't an RF hardware board design role, you'll collaborate closely with RF engineers, but your focus is writing software, drivers, and user-space code.

  • This is not a purely theoretical research position, you will work hands-on with physical radios, embedded systems, and real aircraft flight data in our testing lab.

  • This isn't a siloed backend job, you'll contribute across the full connectivity stack spanning embedded firmware, user-space tools, and cloud logging pipelines.

What You Bring
  • Solid foundational programming skills in C, C++, and Python alongside basic software development tooling like Git and debugging utilities.

  • Demonstrated capability in Linux environments and a technical understanding of networking concepts or embedded systems.

  • Practical exposure to wireless communications, networking, or microcontrollers through academic coursework, student design teams, research labs, or personal projects.

  • Communication skills and a strong drive to learn from senior engineers while building complex autonomous technology.

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience with wireless standards like 802.11 or 5G, single-board computers, SDRs, or robotics design teams is a plus.
