How much do firewall configuration jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 20, 2026, the average hourly pay for firewall configuration in the United States is $45.53, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35.10 and $49.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is firewall configuration?

Firewall configuration refers to the process of setting up and managing rules and policies that control incoming and outgoing network traffic on a computer or network. Firewalls act as a barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external networks, such as the internet, to prevent unauthorized access and protect against cyber threats. Proper configuration involves specifying which data packets are allowed or blocked based on criteria like IP addresses, ports, and protocols. The effectiveness of a firewall greatly depends on how well it is configured and maintained. Regular updates and reviews are essential to ensure continued security.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in firewall configuration roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals responsible for firewall configuration often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving security threats, ensuring minimal downtime during updates, and balancing security with network performance. Staying current with vendor updates and industry best practices is essential to address these issues. Regularly collaborating with other IT and security teams also helps to align firewall policies with overall organizational goals and reduces the risk of misconfigurations. Utilizing automated tools and thorough testing procedures can further minimize errors and maintain robust network security.

What are the three types of firewalls?

Firewall configuration professionals typically work with three main types of firewalls: packet-filtering firewalls, which examine network packets; stateful inspection firewalls, which track active connections; and application-layer firewalls, which filter traffic based on application data. Understanding these types helps in designing secure network defenses and selecting appropriate firewall tools.

What is a firewall in cyber security?

A firewall in cybersecurity is a security device or software that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. For firewall configuration roles, knowledge of network protocols, security policies, and tools like intrusion detection systems is essential to protect organizational networks from unauthorized access.

What is the firewall in a computer?

A firewall in a computer is a security device or software that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. For firewall configuration roles, knowledge of network protocols, security policies, and tools like firewall management software is essential to protect systems from unauthorized access.

What is the difference between Firewall Configuration vs Network Security Technician?

AspectFirewall ConfigurationNetwork Security Technician
CertificationsCompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA SecurityCompTIA Security+, CISSP (optional)
Work EnvironmentNetwork environments, IT departmentsSecurity operations centers, IT teams
Primary FocusSetting up and managing firewallsMonitoring, analyzing, and responding to security threats
Industry UsageIT and cybersecurity firms, corporate networksOrganizations with security teams, government agencies

Firewall Configuration specialists focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining firewalls to control network traffic. Network Security Technicians have a broader role, including monitoring security systems, analyzing threats, and responding to incidents. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Firewall Configuration is more specialized in firewall setup, whereas Network Security Technicians handle overall security operations.

How do I check my firewall?

Firewall configuration specialists typically check firewalls by reviewing settings through management consoles or command-line tools, ensuring rules are correctly applied and active. They may also perform network scans or use diagnostic tools to verify firewall functionality and security policies are enforced properly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Firewall Configuration, and why are they important?

To thrive in Firewall Configuration, you need a solid understanding of network security principles, TCP/IP protocols, and experience with various firewall technologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNA Security. Familiarity with firewall management tools (such as Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, or Fortinet), intrusion detection/prevention systems, and security information and event management (SIEM) platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top professionals apart in this field. These capabilities are crucial for protecting organizational assets, ensuring compliance, and swiftly addressing security threats in complex network environments.
